Gin, 2 oz Old Tom Gin, 3/4 oz Vermouth, 1/4 oz Maraschino, a dash of Bitters and a twist.

This was the old-time Martinez cocktail, as made by the fabled Jerry Thomas, the great Barman of the Bowery back in the days of President Grant, and was the direct ancestor of the Martini. Note that the admixture of the bitters, and Maraschino were yet popular in the days before Repeal, as their strong flavors could cover for the uncertain quality of any available (usually synthetic) Gin.

More likely to cover the taste of that much vermouth.

The Tom and Jerry is my favorite from Jerry.

Yeah it was insane. In the Abbott and Costello movie that he plays a scene in a boat--in water, they played a trick on him. They got out and left him there. He nearly cried like a baby---in three feet of water. He could have gotten out of the boat and walked to shore!
