Someone should just start up a music thread here. A moderator is posting about music on here so I'm sure it won't get shut down, and there is obviously a need for it!
Delta blues are great, but I prefer the Piedmont style myself. While there a number of great pickers in this more ragtimey style, Larry Johnson is one of the best of the unknown.

Well, we can't do Robert Johnson without posting one of Muddy Waters. This particular song was written by Jimmy Reed in his lazy behind the beat style of music.
Muddy Waters cut this particular version in 1971 at Mr. Kelly's Supper Club in Chicago, and it was on his Live At Mr. Kelly's album. I believe it was Paul Oscher on harp, although James Cotton plays on about three selections. The harp player on this tune sounds more like Paul*. Also, Sammy Lawhorn and Pee Wee Madison are on the guitars, and Muddy's trusted Pine Top Perkins is on piano. I think Calvin Jones is on bass and Ernest "Big Crawford" is the drummer (Willie "Big Eyes" Smith wouldn't join Muddy for another couple of years).
As an interesting aside, Bill Dogget had a hit back in about 1958 with Honky Tonk, an instrumental (the Grandaddy of all instrumentals). The entire song was almost six minutes long, so it was really too long for commercial radio. I'm not sure of the exact mechanics as I was just a kid at the time, but it was made into two parts, not surprisingly labeled Part One and Part Two. Part Two had a fabulous sax solo (by Clifford Soloman?). Part One featured Billy Butler on guitar. His solo was the talk of all the musicians and the music writers of the day. One of the writers asked him how he came up with something that great. In his usual self deprecating manner, Billy said, "Well, after the intro, I just started off playing the notes of You Don't Have To Go to get kinda warmed up, and then took it from there." [Quoted material may not be word for word as it has been many many years since I heard/read this.]
The picture is a bit hokey as it has nothing to do with the LP, as I can determine.

She heard this fabulous blues harmonica come over the speaker system. She investigated the source, and it was Paul Oscher. But another gig came along, and he went where the music was.

OK, now that I have talked so much about Billy Butler's solo, I guess it is incumbent on me to track it down. Couldn't find the original, or even much mention of Billy, but I did come up with this selection by a guitar player named Big Al. Don't know anything about him except he plays a Fender and has good tone. I think he gets the solo pretty close, may even have nailed it note for note, but it has been a long time since I heard it. The intro is what all guitar players learn. I even learned it when I took guitar lessons when I was about 12 years old. Wanted to be a drummer (I know--silly me), but my parents weren't about to have that noise in the house.
So here is a cover of the original Honky Tonk, Part I by Big Al.

Look at that big fat bodied guitar. The tone just goes on forever. Marks him as primarily a jazz guitarist, sorta like Freddie Robinson (blues/jazz), the guitar player who played with the greats.

I love blues music and would really like to jump in on this conversation, but I don't want to totally derail the train here. I'm not scolding anyone else, but I am curious if anyone would be interested in moving this discussion into it's own thread over on "The Observation Bar" which is elsewhere here on the Fedora Lounge? (I didn't even know that the Observation Bar existed until I just now went and looked.) If so, I'd be more than happy to participate. Anyone else up for this?

Major, an excellent tie to the Outerwear section, sort of.
You guys probably don't recognize the upright bass player, but that is the great Big Willie Dixon (a very young Willie Dixon), only the greatest blues song writer ever. I had the honor of meeting him in NYC when I was up there hangin' out with Guitar Jr. and Muddy's band in 1974.
I hesitate to post the above comment as Feraud has mentioned our taking the discussion to another thread.
I don't want to be seen as an agitator, but what is needed is a section on post war music, not just a thread on a narrow topic in another section that often stays buried. There has been a lot of interest in the topic from just the guys here in the Outerwear thread. I imagine there would be interest from the loungers who hang out in the other sections as well. There may be some policy considerations I'm not aware of. Don't know as I haven't yet run the idea by Scott or MK.

I can't help but feel that a permanent post-war music thread would be a little out of place for this website...that is, until we make some modifications to the little cartoon guy wearing the coat and fedora at the top of the home page here...

We can continue in this thread. With respect to the OP and topic, the question was quickly answered and there is currently little more to discuss on Alexander Leathers. Also there are members who can contribute to the discussion but are not aware due to the thread title and location.
There are Blues and Roots Music threads in the Radio room and we can continue the discussion there. The discussion can include post-war music and influences as long as it's in keeping with our Golden Era mandate. I'd advise a reading of the Radio room stickies. They provide good info on acceptable content and the posting of video links.
Last but not least, try a broader music discussion thread in the Observation Bar. As an fyi, we’ve had general music discussion threads with varied results.
