Ahh, ain't nothing like it. Any idea who the harp player is? Sounds as though Red says something like, "Alright Short," when he calls for the harp solo. Don't know any harp players with that nickname, either back then or now, and I thought I knew them all.

It is my understanding that James Wayne & the Nighthawks provided the backing on the track. Unfortunately, I don't have the names of the guys in the band.

It certainly does sound like he says "Alright Short" - like you, I know of no harp players with that name[huh]

Here's a nice slab of earlyish Motown. I first heard this in 1965, on the "Going To A Go-Go" album, although it also got a single release, as the follow-up to "Tracks Of My Tears". She'd stopped appearing with them by then, but Claudette's (Smokey's wife) vocals are very evident on this track.

Here's a typical Junior Walker sound, but a tune you rarely hear. When "Cleo's Mood" was originally released on Harvey Records in August 1962, the B-side was "Brainwasher Pt 1" - but when Motown got round to releasing it, on their Soul imprint in December 1965, the B-side had changed to this one. It was a sign of things to come......

I just think Motown wanted to put out everything they had by Mr Autry DeWalt Mixon. He really took off in 1965. Roadrunner, Shotgun, Shoot Your Shot, Shake & Fingerpop - all basically the same tune, but excellent stuff!

Incidentally, the first copies of "Shotgun" were credited to Jnr Walker & All The Stars - if you have a copy like that, it is worth a good few bucks

So did I. I remember when it got airplay, Jr. Walker and the Allstars were credited. I didn't realize his real name was Mixon. Just goes to show that there is always something to be learned. And I thought I knew it all!

I am a huge fan of Lead Belly's music. Although he passed in 1949, many of his later recordings are some of my favorites. His version of The Pines (or Where Did You Sleep Last Night) is one that I really like to listen to during a night on the porch with friends. The song made more a appearance I think when Nirvana covered it during their Unplugged session. I enjoy their version as well, but I love Lead Belly's voice and style.

We've all heard of Levi Stubbs, lead singer of the Four Tops - but we don't hear so much of his brother Joe, even though he was around in a number of groups - the Falcons, the Contours, the Originals, and 100 Proof Aged In Soul.

Here's the clip you posted - it was actually recorded in 1967 for Revilot - wasn't released on single in the UK, but got a release on the LP "Backtrack 6". Had to lug the album around with me in order to DJ the bloody thing!
