I was at a country antiques store yesterday and there on a table was a long, neatly coiled leather whip. I couldn't help thinking that, with a bit of practice, it could be good to whip that out (er, no pun intended, honest) from under the leather coat next time someone called, 'Hey, Indy'.
I don't know this character and this is the first time I heard of him.I always like that character... Ken Curtis was "Festus"... it just never dawned on me to call someone wearing a western hat by that name...
Perfect!
Also, I watched "Mister Roberts" recently, in which Ken Curtis played the sailor named Dolan: it takes a really fine actor to pull off two roles so completely different.
Forgot about him being John Ford's son in law, which explains why he's a background character, and sometimes a bit more, in many of his movies, including a non-hayseed role in "The Quiet Man." Whenever I think of "The Searchers," one of my favorites, I always hear Ken Curtis saying "He married a Comanche squaw! Haw Haw Haw," and his fight with Marty, which stopped for a moment to arrange the safety of "somebody's fiddle." A great character actor.
