A very hansome jacket. No criticism of the jacket, your review reminded me of why I would rarely wear one. They were designed for very cold(high altitude over Northern latitudes) and warmth in a sedendary activity(in an airplane). For me, they are too heavy, bulky, hot and movement is too restricted. They are however a very fine product of both quality craftmanship and materials.

Gloves ?
not military just cheap old brown gloves !
The weight is an issue for these jackets and it is true that it is seldom cold enough to justify wearing on. Similarly my Audi is governed down to 155 mph but I doubt very much I will ever go any where near that speed even for were legal. They are both over engineered I suppose.

Overengineered? Perhaps for the time and technology. Old technology, for sure. Not necessarily a bad thing, though. Topic of discussion for another time.

John,

What would you say is a reasonable temperature range to comfortably wear the LW ANJ-4? It looks heavier than a lot of the other versions that I've seen so I'm curious what your thoughts are (It looks like you're actually wearing a sweater under it in the photo).

To be honest the climate here in the Pacific NW doesn't really require a heavy sheepskin jacket but I've always liked the style so I'm willing to invest even if it only gets used for trips to the mountains and the few cold days we get each year. However, it would be nice if I could pull it out more often.

I would wear it from 5 degrees C downwards. It was well below zero on the day of the photo so I kept my sweater on, no problem. I tend to wait outside shops though when my wife if browsing inside. The lack of fleece on the sleeves and waist is more subtle than the B3.

Thanks John. I've been corresponding with Stuart but I'm still trying to decide if I should pull the trigger or if I should be patient and hope that a used one will pop up.

Stuart's clearly softening in his old age... time was any reqyest for something softer or "more accurate" was met with a diatribe about "jacket queens" who aren't manly enough for LW. Looks superb. It'll be interesting to see how that glossy effect ages over the next few years. The ANJ4 is a sharp design.

In speaking with Stuart he won't admit that the change in stiffness was driven by costumer requests. He is adamant that the change was simply made to make the finish more authentic and closer to the originals.

He happened to have a 44 R in stock from the same run that Johns came from.

Lucky for you! I have a LW G-1. The quality is absolutely amazing (but then so is the price- you really do get what you pay for).
