and of course the iconic photo which has come to make us believe that newsboy caps are the working man's choice:

Ironworkers will tell you this photo was set up to promote the skyscraper (RCA building in ~1930, I believe). I don't know to what extent it was staged. I'm pretty sure the names & the lives of these men are known. The photo may have inadvertently helped to establish the Ironworkers Union & promote safety.

I read an article on it last year (I think I put a link to it in an earlier post on this same thread) which told the story of the pic. If memory serves, it was actual ironworkers in the pic, but of course it was staged, and at least three different photographers took this shot, so to this day no one can say for sure which of them took this exact photo.

Its hard to know where to get your information these days, but the Daily Mail did an article on this photo.

Also another article from the NY Times.

There was also a documentary made on this photo.

Interesting history, and great caps.

From what I have studied before this picture was published, caps like these were not necessarily associated wit the working class.
I wore mine when I drove a yellow taxi cab in NYC one summer back in the early 80s. Wanted to get out of the restaurant kitchens for a while. That was a wild job.
