Not strong words at all dudewuttheheck and I think this post is partly in reply to my post.

You definitely raise some good points on the japanese jackets. Just to clarify, what I deem many of these brands as "fashion" brands does not mean it's a bad thing. In fact, I purchase quite alot of pherrow's and orgueil stuff myself (which is what I think is still within my price range, some other brands are plainly too expensive for me). In fact, I appreciate the niche fashion aspect of these brands more than say, Schott, which I totally agree with you that they are now definitely a fashion brand, and a more weird one in fact, since as ppl mentioned here, their direction seems to be everywhere rather than focused.

Also just to clarify, if I had the cash, I would definitely go for the Japanese brands myself since off the rack it might fit my better, and the details are good too. In fact, I just purchased an orgueil leather jacket recently, and I am very happy with it, although I think the pricing is a bit crazy.

Furthermore, I am not just talking about Shinki leather, it's just leather jackets in general that these japanese brands are charging more. For example, my orgueil jacket costs like 900 US after discount, originally it may be slightly over 1,000 US. My jacket is only what they call an "oiled steerhide", basically cowhide. I bought it knowing that part of the cost is towards their "branding" and "japanese made". Also great point about them being well made with great consistency doesn't mean they are built like a tank. Which I think, depends on one's preference, may not be the first priority. I think their durability is good enough and not everyone needs a jacket that builds like a tank.

Also good point on Iron Heart. Maybe that's why once I look at the prices they are charging for a shirt or something, I immediately hesitated. Even though they have some very nice pieces.

Thank you. That's fair, I just personally see fashion specifically as a negative word. I personally use it negatively. To me, fashion means trendy instead of actual style. Sorry if I responded too negatively because of this word. Agreed, I think Schott's biggest issue right now is their lack of direction. Their pricing has been all over the place which makes them quite confusing.

The off the rack only aspect of the Japanese brands is a bit of an issue, especially given the price premium. At least with Himel, you get customization options and the jacket is made to measure.

Yes, you are right that the prices are higher in general even without Shinki. However, the Shinki jackets are the most expensive by a significant margin. I know it's not the only reason for the cost, however. The durability has proved to be excellent with the Japanese jackets, but having handled Vanson jackets, will agree that those are likely to be more durable. They are specifically built for that.

@Fonzie checking that right now, thanks for the tip! I think you're right. I love assymetrical moto jackets in general, but I don't think any of them work for me.

@Monitor is it possible that you could just try it in person first (assuming you are in the US)? As others have said, this jacket may look significantly different (for better or for worse) in person.

He could order it and look it over, and return it for any reason if not satisfied. Schott has a great return policy...no questions asked !! Monitor, jump on this NOW !!

Within the EU buying from the US is an expensive hobby because you have to go through customs. Having ordered various items in the past, except for the high shipping costs I had to pay 21% of the product price (v.a.t.) plus 15e for process costs.

Dude,
I wouldn't be so quick to rule out the cross zips. After all, anyone who can rock a Himel Grizzly can probably wear any damn jacket they want!
I found that I felt more comfortable in a basic jacket (Vanson CHP or two pocket Langlitz Columbia) without too many pockets, zips, studs, or buckles. Try one of those on if you get a chance, and see what you think.
I'm not trying to push you into a jacket that you don't feel comfortable in, but rather just to let you know I think the cross zips are definitely something you could pull off.

Nonsense dude! As @El Marro pointed out...if you can wear a grizzly there isn't a jacket on the planet you can't wear. I'd love a shawl collared griz. That SJC model has been kicking around in my head since I first saw it here. It was very reasonably priced too. I will always regret not jumping on it.

To my eye, the thing that the Japanese makers do very well (and work quite hard at) is creating an image. Looking at the websites of Schott, Aero, Vanson and worst of all Johnson Leathers...you can clearly see there's not a whole lot of effort put fourth there.
Conversely, the folks from Japan work very hard indeed at cultivating the vintage Americana vibe to the max. The goosenecked '58 fat tire panhead in the background, massive chain wallet, vintage open face helmet painted just so... All shot at sunset...they are selling the image as much as the jacket. Maybe even more so!!! But it clearly resonates with buyers. I've said this before and it makes me chuckle every time...but until fairly recently the only thing Japan made close to leather was vinyl!! Those suduco jackets from the 70's and 80's. Now...they make the most expensive leather on the planet. Go figure.

You're right. But I like it when a company isn't too slick with its images and website and the lack of pretension of the Johnsons site also makes me chuckle. I would like better quality photos of the product range but not too much of the overly crafted, wistful hipster stuff. I am put off by the self-conscious marketing.

Haha trust me when I say this is a jacket I really want. However, I already have another Himel due to arrive tomorrow.

@ton312 oh I know I can. That's the scary part :D

So is Monitor going to get this Schott jacket? I kind of want him to just we can send his pics over to Schott and tell them to replace their website pics with his.

That's a cool jacket! I saw one in the flesh at my daughters Christmas show at her school. Some dad wearing it. It's a beautiful hide and cut very nicely.

Monitor lives in Eastern Europe - it would cost a lot just to try it on.

Ah darn it! @Monitor then ... contrary to what other enablers are saying :D, I think you should see more in hand pics (if they are available) before jumping in. After all, from the comments here, you are not short on jackets....and perhaps throughout this year you would see one in person which you really like (over this particular model)!

Thedi! Thedi! Thedi!

Seconded! Even though I have never had one, the pics alone makes me want to get one...just can't wait for the long wait and also not sure about sizing...

Yes this is damn nice.... as to oiled nubuck : a search on google comes up with this:

Nubuck
Some leathers are buffed and brushed to produce a soft surface with a fuzzy texture. Suede is split leather that has been buffed on its inner side, the side of the hide that was closest to the flesh of the animal. Nubuck is top-grain leather that has been buffed on its outer side, the side of the hide on which the animal's hair grew. Nubuck can also be made from full-grain leather. Because nubuck is made from the strong outer layer of the hide, it is more durable than suede.

Oiled Leather
Manufacturers oil leather to improve its resistance to water, stains and damage. Oiled leather is soft and flexible. It is often used in shoes, where strength and water resistance is important, but it is sometimes used in leather upholstery as well. Oiled nubuck combines the soft surface of nubuck with the durability of oiled leather. It is relatively easy to maintain, and light scuffs can be removed simply by rubbing the surface of the leather with a fingertip.

Not sure how accurate is the above descriptions. But I guess it does withhold water better? Btw I love how the patina looks on the leather for that schott jacket you posted.... unfortunately for this model I already had the tony nowak one...

I think you should check out Rainbow Country's half belt too.. beautiful patina on some of their horsehide jackets as well.. price is in the ouch category though.

@dudewuttheheck What kind of jacket do you have coming from Himel?

Also, when I use the: @dudewuttheheck ...does it notify you that you have a post addressed to you? This is my first time trying it. Thanks.
For some weird reason, it does not notify me. I feel like it should. I have another shawl collar coming from him. It's basically a cossack/campus style jacket with a button front and handwarmer pockets.
