I hadn't paid much attention to this photo until I noticed the young man on the right was wearing modern tennis shoes. Then I noticed the modern plastic equipment case with the metal latches and the white circles on all of the horses' hindquarters.
Not just any butcher. That's William Poole--butcher, bareknuckle pugilist, political activist, and founder of the New York street gang the Bowery Boys. A.K.A. "Bill the Butcher", he was the basis for Daniel Day Lewis' character in Gangs of New York (2002). According to other sources that photo was likely taken in 1855 (the year he died), not 1875.View attachment 121118
