Tonio, Fantastic find!! It has the similar / same size tag as one of my 1929 Echter Borsalinos.

Yes in my opinion they are samples! It is rare, if not impossible, to find Borsalino in which there is a specification of the the type of felt and other details. The paper is glued on the sweatband, another "weird" thing in a Borsalino. By the way if you see in the Catalog 88-89 I'm posting you will find the "Charlait" felt mentioned. I suppose it is a finish of felt Giuseppe learned in France and he used in his own factory. It is actually mentioned in the today catalog as " Feltro rasato particolarmente adatto alla stagione invernale, ottenuto da un mix di morbido pelo di lepre e coniglio".
The style is a wide brim hat with medium crown, not so rare here in the begigging of the last century

I didn't look back at other Sample tags examples but "Refer" and "Mod" are most likely the top two numbers in the Cell paper label type (should be able to match with internal Paper label). Also "Qualita II" on the Sample tag most likely means "Qualita Superiore".
By the way the Echter Borsalino external Size tag (Point 5) I posted above did not match the internal label Size (Point 5 1/2).
I went back and checked and it appears the first Cell number (top left corner) of the internal Cell Paper label type is "Mod" (Model No.) and the second Cell number (top right corner) is "Refer" (Reference No.). The photos are Tonio's old Stiff Felt.

Yes I went back and checked too (updated my post). The top left Cell is the Model No. and top right Cell is the Reference No. What is interesting is my date stamped 1929 Echter Borsalinos Model No. start with 16 (16878, 16096) and they are different forms.
Now somebody has to find a catalog from the 1920s.

Among the many fans of hats they want to inspire for a new hat made to measure, the Borsalino 88-89 catalog could be a source. In the two section showed, Linea seta e Qualità Superiore, they could have many reference models with sizes and shapes. I believe there is material for many hats. It is just a personal opinion
Personally, there are at least five hats that I would buy immediately or that I would like to find on the second hand. Matter of taste! Ah I noticed that there were still top hats and bowls in the catalog, as well as models with felt and finishes that other Italian producers had in production in the same period

Hi chaps, here's another Borso for the record books, bought a couple of weeks ago and what a lovely example it is!. Had a chat with Stefan about possible age, i thought it could be late thirties early 40s, Stefan aired with caution and suggested early 40s. I suppose it all depends on the transition between the hand written tags (cells) and when the printed ones came into use?. Steve might no about this!.

I am fairly certain that the European market hats with the separate Size stamp go back to the mid to later 1930s (not sure how long they lasted). Here is a date stamped (1938) Echter Borsalino that belongs to Manfred (see below). The Size stamp is missing but you can see where is was attached on the right side of the Main paper label. Your hat looks like it's from a similar time period (at least to me).

This Echter Borsalino has the Size stamp. The lady that sold it to me said that it belonged to her father and was purchased prior to WWII. Her father passed away in 1948.

Michael, I think it's fairly typical of hats from this time period and earlier but we have a small sample size. It's also a "Qualitá Extra Superiore".

It is a cool hat. I am however very intrigued by the liner and sweatband, mainly because of the prominent way it refers to the king of Italy. Just to clarify, I was only addressing the liner composition and printing. I have no idea of the content other than what is Borsalino related (center crest).
