Perhaps the brim was formed with a press first and then tossed into the crown press upside down. Looks very odd...

Trust me when I tell you, you don't need to distress a black at. Just wear it. It will get dusty/dirty soon enough. Out of all my hats the black needs bushed more then any other colour.

Gray. I haven't compared the color against my Caribou Strat but I would say it would be very close.
That sounds good to me and about as rare as black, I would think. Hope you like it.
