I've been a hat guy for a long time, since my teens in the late sixties. Back around 1967 or 1968, I bought this Stetson boater:



And a few years later, a second one when we destroyed the first when I starred in a Super 8 silent comedy (note punched-through crown in cast pic!):



Both of these hats came from the old Campbell Hat Shop on Hudson Avenue in Yonkers, NY... and they only cost around $10 or $12 at the time. Of course, the store's long gone, but here's the storefront more recently:



BTW, I still have the second Stetson boater, it's been boxed/closeted for nearly 50 years and is in great shape. Anybody interested in a vintage 6-7/8? I ultimately grew up to be a 7-1/8!

Edit: Apparently the limit was easy as I can't find much from the '60s.

Sold out of Kooi Knapper Men's Wear in Kalamazoo, MI.

The store was a part of the Kalamazoo mall, at the time of its opening in 1959, it was the first outdoor pedestrian mall in the U.S., although the store itself seems to have been open since 1947.

I've been wanting to collect my Kleinhans hats and store pictures but haven't had time yet. This is a great start. They billed themselves as the largest mens store in the country. The store is gone, but the Hotel Lafayette has been restored and is doing nicely.

A beater Bowler from Stetson.

@GoldenEraFan stated: The Broadway and 33rd shop was Young's Stetson from it's opening in 1911 to sometime in the '60s or '70s when the owners at that time by the name of John and Jack (or something like that) changed the name to JJ Hat Center, though I have a belief the "center" part came later. The store was moved to it's current location in 1991 and has been run by the same owner since. In 2015 they put Stetson neon back on the front.

I have quite a few hats from Buffalo based Kleinhans. There are some store window photos in this blog post. The building looks good today with the newly renovated Lafayette Hotel as its anchor.

This postcard is likely contemporary with the Borsalino shown below.

The cities listed might indicate that the hat is prior to 1951 when a third located was added.

St. Louis, Missouri (1913):

Famous-Barr occupied the lower floors of the enormous Railway Exchange Building in downtown St. Louis on September 8, 1913.

Eventually, Famous-Barr grew into 13 floors of the Landmark terra-cotta faced structure.

Became Macys in 2006 and closed in 2013.

Clayton, Missouri (1948):

Closed in 1991.

Although the imprint says Wayne, MI, the location seems to have been Plymouth.

I'll try to do some more digging, but every reference I found had them on Main St. in Plymouth. Since this is an OPS-ERA hat, I know when it was sold, at least.

Edit: I double-checked. The above photos are c. 1955. So they were in Plymouth after my hats were sold. Wayne and Plymouth are 10-12 miles apart.

Above is the 6th & Vine location. They moved there after being in Walnut St. since 1907 (the contemporary arts center is there now).
