Next month in late October Sotheby's will auction off a $5M whisky collection being called "The Ultimate Whisky Collection". It will eclipse the 3,000 bottle Bonham collection auctioned in 2009.

Macallan Single Malts make up 70% of the collection anchored by a rare 1926 60 yr old in Macallan's star bottle with pre auction estimates of $425K - $545K. Others of interest include a 1919 Springbank bringing estimates of $121K - $170K; a 1937 Glenfiddich 64 yr old ($66K - $91K); first & second releases of Glenfiddich 50 yr olds ($18K - $24K); a 1937 Balvenie 50 yr old ($23K -$30K); two Mortlach 70 yr olds ($18K - $24K); and bottles from the Gordon & MacPhail Generations Series will be sold.

The owner is anonymous but said to be a wine collector also.

Maybe I can afford a bottle of the Glenfarclas. Incredible whiskey history. If I could ever afford such indulgences, other than the bottles, the history would be lost after all the tasting parties we would have. I just wouldn't be able to restrain myself..

Don't see you with a WAR about much. Good looking with great colors. Is that a NW hat?

It is the NW, a pic from file. I like Glenfarclas 12 just fine but it needs to come back to the competition's price point. It rarely goes on sale around here so I don't buy it often. My $ goes to the competition.

Who knows how much those collectible Scotch Whiskys will continue to appreciate as an investment, if any. But I'm sure if you could put together the full series of Gordon & MacPhail Generations Series it will appreciate in value.

Like you said, I would be too tempted to have any of it around. I would have to keep it locked up.

Liquor store was having a flash sale on Boot Hill Distillery Spirits thru tomorrow. I just picked up a bottle of their White Whiskey but haven't cracked it just yet. They also distill Red Eye Bourbon, some vodka & gin. If it's tolerable there will be time to pick up more tomorrow.

Located on the grounds of the original Boot Hill Cemetery, Dodge City, KS. The bldg was built as a municipal bldg in 1927.

A Founders Mas Agave beer was a perfect pairing with grilled sole and a picante saucse with a fruit salad from brunch. ( https://foundersbrewing.com/our-beer/mas-agave/) An imperial gose (sour fruit variation often paired with a salt) that was brewed with agave, lime and sea salt and then aged in tequila barrels is a unique taste, but perfect for this moment. One beer is ample, for this short bald fellow, as it is a 10% ABV. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the brunch.

Home after late morning errands found me brewing some Peets Coffee.

A straw cap and a Founders All Day IPA is perfect for a warm Fall afternoon on the dock.

Nice, Eric. I stay pretty loyal to Michigan micros being from Detroit, but I need to give founders more love. The All Day IPA is an interesting low alcohol beer, a buddy had to let me know thats where the name came from, low alcohol so you can drink it ‘All Day’.
Reminds me of a different buddies favorite saying, ‘Ya can’t drink all day unless you start in the mornin!’.

Good afternoon. Grilling a lamb roast in the on and off again light rain. Guests arrive in a couple of hours so dinner preparation are at the frenetic stage. I picked up a bourbon and a whiskey for evening guests that are whiskey fans. I have had neither - yet.

I choose a Woodford Reserve whiskey and a Red Breast Single Pot Still 12 year Irish Whiskey for the evening. I am truly a whiskey rookie. The Woodford, I chose as the reference point. It was described to me as the bourbon whiskey that every whiskey shelf should have. Very drinkable I have been told. The Red Breast was a strong recommendation for a pot stilled (malted and unmalted barley) Irish Whiskey. I asked for a terrific representation of drinkable Irish whiskey. I looked at a couple others that were more expensive and went with this mid-priced whiskey.

More to come.

BTW: Hat in background is a Knox Twenty (green felt).

Jack; My friends and I tasted the whiskeys yesterday. My buds are whiskey drinkers. Both agreed that the Woodford is an excellent first timers whiskey. Excellent taste without a big alcohol burn. I was not sold on sipping the Woodford. The Red Breast was superior when tasting neat yesterday. It drinks velvety without a harsh edge. I tried a second helping with 2 ice cubes and preferred the resultant taste. I admit I liked this and will come back to taste it periodically the next couple of weeks. My friends will be bringing some or their "expensive whiskeys to taste next time. We will see.

This evening my hat and I waited for a couple of my friends to play acoustic blues and jazz.

3 options to tame the Woodford Reserve or anything else:

*Neat with just a tablespoon of water. The water will open up flavors & quiet down the medicinal taste if that's what you are disliking.

*With just a few small ice chips or whiskey stones. That will cool it without diluting it.

*OTR. Will cool & dilute as the ice melts.

Look forward to hearing what your friends bring for you to sample.

I sacrifice good beer for all you can eat smoked BBQ ribs every chance I get. I wore my new Gannon Highwayman & tried to replicate previous pics of my other Highwayman. You can see the comparison pics in the Side by Side thread.

Great hat and pics, HJ. Bad beer. For good Q, sacrifices will be made. Probably my favorite ribbon width for the brim and style of hat.

The Budweiser Clydesdales will be in Tuscaloosa Saturday.

Growing up in this area most young guys cut their eye teeth drinking Anheiser Busch & McCormicks. It kills the palate so you can start clean when you get to the premiums.

Those Clydesdales are beautiful beasts.

I've probably consumed more AB products than any other.

They make a game or two every year. Saw them up close in Birmingham a few years ago. Don't realize how massive they are until you're standing next to them and a hitch of 8 together is a sight.

@Eric SBG, I know you try to eat healthy & stay away from red meat but the next time you charcoal grill a good strip, ribeye or porterhouse steak, try that Woodford Reserve again. Or a smoky Islay Single Malt Scotch. Excellent pairing with beef!

It was a great day for a Stetson One-hundred! And several American Brown Ales aged in Elijah Craig Bourbon casks at Granite City.
