Thank you shoes! I have a large stainless pot that I use. I wet and steam the felt, and invert the hat into the pot. Then start curling sections around the pot brim. I also use plastic automotive wire loom that is split., and fits over the pot edge if I want a larger curl. Low budget stuff [emoji16].

Here it is. I curl about a 4"-5" section at a time. Then curl the opposite side, working criss cross like putting on lug nuts. When it is roughed in, then I start working around the brim smoothing it all together. The felt must be wet, and very hot, to be pliable enough. A correct shackle would work better and faster, but I've gotten used to this.

I really like your barbed wire hatband. I've been trying to make a decent one myself the last couple months. Not having much luck. I like yours better. ;)
Thinking about making a hatband or two out of an old Piteado breastplate. I'm worried it might be too thick & pucker along the top edge if it is. I don't want to destroy the breastplate by cutting it up if it won't work. I love real Piteado & it's hard to find.

HJ, that is beautiful work. Are you able to remove the backing w/o causing problems to the front and edging? Is that leather more thin and pliable than what we usually see in harness leather breastplates? Almost seems it would have to be to do that kind of work.

I hope it works out. I see it as a good looking band.

The backing is pretty thin & is flaking at a couple of spots; needs to be glued back down. To remove it, it wouldn't gain much in making it thinner, would lose the scolloped edge along the top & bottom, & would expose the cactus thread & small knots where it is tied off. I just don't think it will work. I've never found old tack that will.

So guys, what do you think? Please forgive the lighting and composition of the photo. I'm more of a writer than a photographer. This isn't the way it will be forever, but I like the look for now. I couldn't keep the wide ribbon on it. Every time I looked at it, I could only think "fedora", so I went with this one for now. I almost cut the brim down to 3 1/2, but now I'm glad I left it the way it was. I may put a 3/4" ribbon on it eventually. All input will be appreciated.

I don't know why I comes out upside down. Can anyone fix it?
