Snowy Sunday morning. In the “loungewear” (I call it pajamas) the lovely missus bought for me a couple years ago, and hoping I can remain so attired for the remainder of the day.

Got plenty of food, got cable and internet. The furnace is doing what the furnace is supposed to be doing.

If this is a symptom of creeping decrepitude, well, I gotta wonder if decrepitude might be underrated.

I had just that in a Hotel lounge in England this week. The couch was so deep and soft I thought I would need a crane to get out of t. Not a pretty sight.

On the theater seats, I'm not a fan but to each their own. I don't go to enough shows anymore them to care whether I like the seats.
My complaint is the temperature. I do not understand why they feel it is necessary to keep the thermostat in the safe to store meat range during the summer months. I have a pretty wide range I can be comfortable in but when I see other patrons bringing a jacket or sweater in with them, I have to wonder what the reasoning is for it.

I don't know how they do it in multiplexes, but in our place, there is no "thermostat" to adjust. The HVAC system is controlled by a complex computer control module that regulates not just temperature but also outside air intake and internal CO2 concentration by controlling dampers, air-circulation fans, heat, and cooling. It's impossible to control the specific temperature at any given specific point in such a large open space -- so the regulation is based on the air as it is sucked into the return-air intake, not how it feels at any one seat.

In short, if somebody tells me they're too cold or too warm, all I can do is tell them to try a different seat.

THe biggest issue I have to deal with is not the temperature in the theatre, but the temperature in the projection booth. The digital projection system we installed several years ago vents its exhaust -- from a 2000 watt xenon arc lamp -- directly into the booth. And the projector will shut itself down for safety reasons (so that lamp doesn't, you know, explode and kill me) if the booth temperature exceeds 90 degrees. So we have to run a special auxiliary AC system in the booth at 64 degrees, year round, just to keep the equipment from failure. I have had to painstakingly explain this to executive bean counters who don't understand what possible reason there is for running an AC system in the dead of a Maine winter, but my life depends on it, so I run it.

Perhaps the excess heat from the lamp could be vented to the outside air through something like a flue. I wonder why no one has ever thought of that...

We have that for our film projectors, but there's no room to plumb the air from the digital projector over to the connection without blocking access to the viewing ports. We also looked simply having a window we could open to the outside, but the contractor advised that it would be cost-prohibitive to add one given the way the walls are constructed. If only in 2004 they could have forseen 2013...

Well, just tear down that b**ch of a bearing wall and put a window where it ought to be!

Clicking on your link shows me a very needy, insecure woman who instead of being cremated upon her death will be recycled into Tupperware.
Sad.

You know you're getting old when Home Alone was 30 years ago

Chicago had a mild December dawn yesterday, so I wore my bootleg 101st Airborne A2 jacket and stopped
at Starbucks for my usual cup of joe before the train arrived, when the kid behind the counter asked,
"When were you in sir, Vietnam?"
"Yes."
"That was what, forty years ago?"
Thanks kid.;)

... when you find Patrick Mahomes’s mother hotter than his girlfriend.
A few years back I had a gig as a consultant to a Federal party election candidate. I was monitoring a speech she gave at a wealthy supporter's event. The room was filled with wealthy women of a certain age (not young). I found myself admiring them and then caught myself.....there I was checking out and admiring all the old broads! Never thought that would happen.
