It's finally snowing in Iowa. Really enjoying it, along with the Cordovan Bootlegger, which is not for sale anymore. Just love it too much.

I recently bought this highwayman on ebay and it’s quite old in age, beginning of the 90s .. I want to use it as the main jacket for every day, it really is very comfortable soft, but there is one question .. how to get rid of the smell of old clothes from him (mustiness) and would like to betray the skin shine, what means do you use? thanks.

B, where in the hell have you been hiding this one? Awesome jacket. Looks great on you.
Thanks J, again.
I believe it was your post in the Deals thread that led this to me. It didn’t take but a minute to Bin it. I don’t think i even read the description for fear of losing it. Lol
There was a short discussion about the originality of the bearded lapels and short zip. Took about a second in hand to see it was original.
One of my top 3 most comfy leathers, all vintage.

This is very nice! I don't recall pics of this one. It does look plenty warm. I do like the California Sportswear label. This label seems to go into the early 60s. I'm not sure what that zip is dated. Looks like a quality hide, typical of their jackets.
Thank you Terry and i concur, the hide is a quality not always seen on many older jackets. The zip box is a puzzle to me. I’ve looked at zip threads and have not found this one so hard to date other than fairly old. Thanks for the praise i figured you’d appreciate it. It and the orig Windward i got from you are my feel good jackets.

A very hard question indeed...
Personally at this point I'd put it spread out inside a closed car with an Ozone-Generator running for a couple of hours...then leave it shut up inside the car for 24 hours before removing it. May take a couple of these cycles. It's a real thing that Auto dealers use to help get rid of smoke smells from smoker's cars they take in on trade. Might work for the jacket: https://www.yourmechanic.com/articl...wanted-odors-in-your-vehicle-by-spencer-cates

Vanson perforated Comet.jpg

Vanson Perforated Comet today , once again down the West Coast Highway by the southern Indian Ocean.
Photo location a tad uninspiring but you get that ! Motorcycle runs you park up where you can snatch a spot !
Why the perforated Vanson today ? 16C on leaving home 8.30AM , with 31C on the return leg at 2PM.
Those wee perforations work well at 50Km/H or above. Perfect at 110Km/H.
On a "cool" day they would indeed be "too much".

Here in Australia I have used a Eucalyptus woolwash and a gentle cold cycle on a toploader washing machine.NO SPIN DRY!
I have done this to several "vintage" jackets including the perforated Vanson I wore today.
The washout water can appear ATROCIOUS !
Lie it in the bath after the wash (or similar , shower base or whatever) until most of the runoff/drips cease.
Then outside on a broad hanger , careful of the shoulders. In the shade , no direct sun. Wind is good.
Now here in Western Australia most of the year you can "line dry in the shade" even in winter.
For a portion of the time I leave the jacket "inside out" as well.
I appreciate for you in St Petersburg this is probably not an option in January/February.

Once dry I use whatever leather treatment I have to hand , Australian RM Williams , Montana Pitch blend ( ex-US)
I also lube all the zippers as well , using M Essentials Zip Tech zipper lubricant.
Comes in a "glue stick" type applicator

The first and least risky/work intense step is to use baking soda. Rub it into the lining of the jacket or put the jacket insides out in a bag with baking soda and shake and leave like that for a day. The natron in baking soda neutralizes most smells and you can get off remaining baking soda very easily.

Step two is putting the jacket into the freezer/outside in cold winter night. Cold kills most bacteria responsible for the smell. That's why Levis recommends putting their jeans into freezer rather than washing them too often. Works for wool lining in jacket too. Did it before, the cold did no harm to the leather that I could see.

If jacket still smells after this, tape zipper so it doesn't get damaged and put the jacket into the washer at 30° with some neutral washing elixir that doesn't damage the leather. Don't put jacket into tumbler afterwards (too warm) , leave it hanging for two days or so until it's dried. You probably have to treat leather after this.

Thank you John, yes, I’m probably using soda for a start .. if it doesn’t help, I’ll leave it in the cold in the night;)

There is still an opinion that ground coffee is spilled on a jacket and locked in a box for a couple of days ..
