My 'number' is somewhere around the 50 mark (fur and straw) which I currently exceeding by a just a few. The limitation is imposed by storage space. I have room to store 30 hats, in boxes, orderly. The others are just stacked in our guest bedroom which is good except for when guests arrive. Don't necessarily want to stop but where to stack them really is an issue. and divorcing my wife just to gain more closet space is not up for discussion...…..at the moment. ……..besides she might ask for 1/2 the hats!
Too many guests, if you ask me.

I got you on the hats, not by much, but you beat my wife on the shoe department, lol....

Joke aside, that's what I'm talking about, quality over quantity is my motto.

I will contribute my count of 23 hats, all but one from Optimo (including 3 Monticristi Panamas and 2 Milans). The 1 non Optimo is a Resistol cowboys hat I purchased on a whim in Virginia City, Nevada.

For what it is worth I have 52 pair of shoes with 3 additional pairs on order.

Me, the dog, the spouse, and the hats are all still inside the house so I'm not there yet. I will cop to having lowered shelves and hanger rods so the space on shelf is a dimension that some multiple of hat box height will fit. You can't put a 9 inch hat box into that 4.25 inches left above those other two hat boxes. I don't find that it is important to see shoes on the floor in that hanger area.....

One advantage of being in Seattle is that it is easy to justify double the number that would normally be considered sufficient (whatever that is ...)
After all, you need backup while yesterday's hat is drying from the soaking it took in the rain.
I have been partial to the cascades.

I like when people cop to things. Reminds me of home.

I've got about 15 felts of different styles and colors and half a dozen straws.
Three of the felts that have been with me for over 40 years. They're well worn and showing their age. Just had new sweat bands put in them. Plus I have a Stetson Bowler that is from around 1915, still in impeccable condition, that is on it's 2nd sweatband.
And It's not the best thing for my wallet to live close to the Stetson/Resistol factory ! I manage to get in and out of there a few times a year without buying anything but last year I ended up with 4 new felts from those visits.

Highest Hat count in my home at one time, years ago, 161. Shoes (his including vintage boots, vintage dress shoes, red wings, etc.) 247, mine shoe count 122
I have sold some hats for extra income to fix my Mercedez Benz, that took the Hat count down to 139. Two of my bedrooms are stuffed with storage racks for suits, sport coats, hats, shoe, ties. The financial history of buying everything over the past 11 years, adds up to way past $400,000.00 and I am sure it would go up more if I added things such as cufflinks, neckties, braces, pocket squares, wallets, watches rings. And that would be for what Daniel had from me, not including things he purchased for me or what I may have purchased for myself.

The "Hat bug" can bring a whole lot of fashion upgrades which can be expensive...yet all worth it in my opinion. We are all here just one life time...spend it when you can, enjoy it with love, and own it like it may be your last day.

The Central Limits Theorum suggests a minimum sample size of 30 is required for the distribution to approach normal.

I suggest that those with fewer than 30 hats buy enough to catch up :)

How many is enough?
"Sample size is an element of research design that significantly affects the validity and clinical relevance of the findings identified in research studies. Factors that influence sample size include the effect size, or difference expected between groups or time points, the homogeneity of the study participants, the risk of error that investigators consider acceptable and the rate of participant attrition expected during the study. Appropriate planning in regard to each of these elements optimises the likelihood of finding an important result that is both clinically and statistically meaningful."

In order to be statistically significant ,I suggest that hat racks of <75 not be considered. Hat racks with multiplies of 75 should be given larger confidence percentages for comments on The Fedora Lounge.

Apologies for my attempt at humor above. I find this question to be wanting. Of course the correct answer is always - 1 more than I have right now.

Amused this afternoon, Eric -
