As i watched the recent thread of a new members j23 i smiled knowing that i had also just received mine.
46
23 pit requested
26 sleeves
25.5 back
Flight rayon lining. Crown main, as well as crown package on pockets an sleeves. The two pockets on rear (i guess for a passenger) are soft suede / moleskin. D pocket is leather lined inside. The leather is awsome with a soft hand and immediate grain, in 4 oz hh.

Congrats, there's one of the best MC jackets ever shown above! Smart decision about Crowns - they're stellar and should perfectly match with this hard'n'heavy MC leather. There's nothing to improve in this jacket, already perfect.
Mate, you've just got MC perfection!

There are other zipper options that aren't upcharge that are good. The talon 10 kris b got is one. Or you could send him your own zipper. To me the crown is awsome an worth it, once he runs out they are gone, period. I wonder how many more of these he has. They really are awsome zippers, man are they cool, and high quality.

I never thought I would care this much about zippers... until I got my first crowns with the Trojan. They look completely different from other zippers

Why these crown zippers are so expensive? The teeth admittedly look nice when done up but $500 it’s hard to stomach. What’s the deal with those?

NOS Crowns are hard to find nowadays, it might be the main reason. Plus, they're durable. They look interesting.
They're mainly for those who don't like YKK zippers at all (me incl.)))
I think @John D Maccarter investments in Crowns in his jackets are very smart, I understand his choice well and support his choice with Crown zippers. To me personally - it's hardly possible to find any better zippers than NOS Crown, esp. for such thick&sturdy leather as LW HH. Esp. considering historical period correctness.
I know some people might don't care about that, but once again - to each their own.

They aren't repros like most other "vintage" zippers on the market, LW is using the original NOS and you'll hear stories about how once they run out of them, that's it. They're supposedly very nice though I personally dislike the tab as it reminds me of a toilet seat.

Problem is, main zipper failure is slowly becoming synonymous with LW jackets. Is it the NOS cotton tape that's degrading with time or something else? No clue but it's happening at an alarming rate.

And another thing... You can have YKK make you ANY vtg zipper in the world without anyone being any smarter.

This is a model of a zipper from YKK's regular line, built around the same patent as the Crown. Replace the pull and voila, job done. Coulda fool me.

Right thanks guys for your answers. It’s mostly a scarcity issue then. I thought there might have been something in the mechanics that set them apart.

That YKK zipper looks remarkably similar!

Let’s keep it in perspective. It’s $500 for all the zippers on the J23. That’s a lot of zips. Mine was considerably less. The crown main zip is $250. My YKK main zip replacement with JL was not too far off from that price.

I haven’t heard or read about a main zip failure. Please direct me to that info as I would be very interested in it. What has happened is a slight tear in the zip fabric by the main zip stop. On the CHP’s Scoville, it happened rather quick then stopped. All good. No issues. Actually took some time to break in this thing but niw it is buttery soft. On the J23 I purchased from HH (I need to recheck to see what type of zipper), it was already there. The tear hasn’t grown and the zip works fine. Do I wish it didn’t happen, effin right I do, it’s the only annoying thing about the jackets. But the zips work fine. Oh, The 10 Talon on the PJ27 is perfect, no issues. Butter.

Edit: The exact same thing happened on my commando’s main YKK zip. Little tear, it stops, zipper flawless otherwise

the lack of wiggle on the puller feel restrictive to me

I like the others on that list, but unless you plan to buy bulk or live next door to YKK supplier, you won't likely find these on your local DIY sewing supplier shop I bet, they probably only have standard YKK puller or Excella.

I do like the look of the material of that expensive zip, looks like pewter or something.
