I have a couple of Sunbody's. This one doesn't get a lot of head time but it was the right price. I wanted the widest brimed, open crowned hat I could find to make an affordable, 18th century admiral inspired hat for our annual hat party. I think it came our well.

I like Milan hats a lot. They can breathe and don’t seem as fragile as Panama hats. The price is going to be more for Milan straw, but a Milan weave hemp hat is a solid option. Stetson, Peter Bros., etc. make hemp hats. I also don’t mind a well vented Shantung; I don’t like the plastic feel or the lack of ruggedness, but they fill a niche. Do you have a brim width and/or style in mind?

I have nothing against palm, and I might buy another this Spring. For the price, why not try a SunBody? @Mustang Mike's Hats has offered standard SunBody hats at a discount for Lounge Members.
How do I go about inquiring about Mustang Mike’s prices and availability?

Hi

Several of my Sunbody hats have vents in the crown. it helps, not much, but it does help.
Later
I see they have 2 sizes of ventilation eyelets available, I wonder if the bigger of the 2 sizes would serve me better as far as breathability purposes go

Hi, I'm not sure how big the ones I have are, are the eyelet sizes on Sunbody's sight or Mustang Mike's?

Later
Don’t recall seeing them on Mustang’s site, sizes that is. On Sunbody’s site it simply says “small” or “large” and the small are shown.
Cheers

I just took a look at Sunbody’s site and upon further inspection I see they do list sizes for both available eyelets. Large are 1/4”. Small are 1/8”.
Cheers

First sunbody I have purchased. Bought the standard palm open crown with 3 inch brim. Added the burgundy binding plus burgundy band also black eyelets. The palm straw is stiff and easy to steam. I would highly reccomend the eyelets to vent. All in all a 10. Just ordered the open road with 2.5 brim. Brown binding and hat band plus brown eyelets. I will post a pic when I get it.

I'd advise anyone thinking of getting one of their hats to give them a call at their toll-free number. They're very nice to deal with on the phone and very helpful: well-run operation with great customer service.

Here's my new Sunbody, the model they refer to on their website as "Guatemalan Pinto Fedora":

iNPzzCy.jpg

Yeah, it's no longer a Fedora 'cause I wanted more of a Pork Pie. :D All I really did was tighten the pinch a bit, flatten the top while maintaining the teardrop shape, and give the brim a much deeper "flange" all the way around. It goes to show just how easy it is to shape a Sunbody hat as long as you soak it in cold water first. From the angle in the photos it looks kinda' big for my head and, truth be told, I'd prefer to lower the crown height another 1/4"-1/2". But it fits like a glove as it is and would only sit on top of my head if it were any lower, so...

That looks good on you. When I was a kid some of my dad's pals wore Pork Pies and I thought they looked cool, but if I try to wear one I look like a 1950s comedian.

Thank you! I've liked Pork Pie hats for as long as I can remember, but being a "child of the 60s" I wore my hair shoulder length until four or five years ago (when I finally decided I'd had enough of it) so they never looked "right" on my head until I started cutting my hair shorter. I finally bought a "fedora converted to a pork pie" from a member here and really liked it, and have managed to pick up a few more narrow brimmed hats that I wear brim up "pork pie style". My inspiration for this one was the hat Darren McGavin wore as Carl Kolchak in two TV movies and the 1974-75 TV series Kolchak: The Night Stalker. I didn't want an exact duplicate, but rather something that was similar and I thought this hat would serve that purpose. I'm still refining the shape and I'll probably replace that puggaree with something else, but so far I'm liking this hat as-is.

I like it they are a little heavier. I'm kinda OCD about hats holding their shape and sunbody will do that. Liked it so well have another coming.
