That's a real shame. I highly recommend it if you ever get the chance. It's pretty much the same now as it would have been back then.

For several years, it always seemed like we were heading West on I-70 from Dayton every summer. Wisconsin Dells; Denver; Yellowstone; Kalispell, Montana.

And we stopped everywhere. Wall Drug, See the Giant Prairie Dog, Dinosaur Monuments, you name it. We would certainly have stopped at Rock City.

Do you know how many smashed pennies I had with an inscription on it? Lots.

...This wasn't vintage neon nor a ghost sign so I thought I'd drop it here. Not sure the connection between the Apollo moon lander and used tires, but you can bet if I had been in the market for some, this is where I'd be have gotten them.
From the 1960s until I don't know exactly when, one of the businesses in a neighboring city had a sign in the front of their parking lot that was a full-size 3D representation of the conical "Command Module" from one of the Apollo missions on a stylized column-type cement support that was 20-30 feet tall. It was a rather simple affair with the details painted on, but as a kid who was extremely interested in the space program I thought it was "cool".

Yes, spot on. For about ten years in there, anything space flight/moon/astronaut-y was cool, which is why all this stuff popped up.

I guess it's worth mentioning that this photo was taken in Huntsville, Alabama, home of the Marshall Space Flight Center, where Wernher Von Braun designed the Saturn V rocket that carried the Apollo astronauts to the moon. This sign definitely looks old enough to be from that era, and at this point it's anybody's guess what this business may have originally been before it became a used tire emporium.
