"Yes I do have 2 green vintage Stetson Stratoliner hats" was the answer to my wife this morning. They are different. The older Stratoliner (decade + earlier hat) has light very malleable felt with a soft fine quality leather sweat. The older one, while still malleable is not baby soft in feel to the fingers.

Stetson Stratoliners in the same felt hue, pine green, are not the same.

The decades difference between the hats is obvious, to me.

Hey everyone!
Picked this up at my favorite thrift store yesterday. It's my favorite because the manager will put things like this aside for me...
My first Stratoliner.

No factory tags under the sweatband.
The brim is 2 3/4", the open crown just under 5 1/2".127g. It has the star sweatband creast and the maple leaf liner crest, so my age guess is '52 to '53ish.

Congratulations, John! We all remember our first vintage Strat (those lucky enough, at least). Your buddy at the thrift store is alright.

Thanks Jim!
Now all I need is for the same donor to drop off the Stetsonian still missing from my collection. And the Playboy. And the.. :)
Yes, it is nice to have friends in the thrift business! I get first look at cool hats that find their way to a couple of local stores.

great vintage ad! I notice this is mostly vintage Stratoliners. I have a new open crown on order and wonder any thoughts on the nature of the fabric, relative to vintage and relative to other modern fur? thanks.

Hello Dave... not sure why a Naugatuck, Conn. store was advertising in an Oakland, Calif newspaper, but the Boeing Stratoliner had its first flight in 1938 and in its trademark filing for the Stratoliner, Stetson cited a first use in trade date of April 19, 1940 (which was my Mom's 14th birthday).
Yes, see my edited post to reflect this above

Dave, thanks for that suggestion; i have been to that thread but going back several years there is nothing that actually talks about the hand of the modern Stratoliner. mostly just comments on where to get vintage, general quality preferences or comments about declining quality. What i am hoping is that someone who owns/wears both modern and vintage can give a more qualitative comparison. Doug
