Well Montana is an American state! Besides Mounties put the dents in all wrong ;)
I have done a bit of the history of what you refer to as the Mountie style. That is the style Canadian cowboys used. Then the NWMP used them for unofficial field hats. They ended up joining the Boar War as the Canadian Mounted Rifles. Lord Baden Powell liked the style so much he adopted it as his own. Powell started the world scouting organization using the style as the official uniform. So when the NWMP turned into the RCMP and tried to use it as part of their uniform they actually had to get permission from the World Scouting Organization.
No idea why you yanks wear them like you do. :p

@johnnycanuck Very interesting, I love history and tidbits like this always intrigues me. Amazing how many things are interconnected. I'm sure in the 1800's and probably even now the line between Montana and Canada was a bit blurred and many cowboys didn't know or care where exactly they were.

What’s interesting (at least interesting to me) is with the pinch at the front I usually think of Doughboys or Rangers more than Montana Cowboys. It’s interesting how everyone relates to different styles in their own way.
Just to add some photos for people who don’t like to read. ;)

There was a time you could tell where someone was from or what ranch they worked for by their hat crease. But with anything time changes things up and muddies the already murky waters of the past. For example the "Gus" crease recently discussed has only been called that since the movie Lonesome Dove. The style had been around much longer than that of course and was most commonly known as the "Carlsbad". Although I have seen photos of Appalachian hillbillies (perhaps why I like it so much ;)) around the turn of the century wearing what we'd call a "Gus" nowadays. :)

Just finished up this tan 3X Resistol for another short brimmed Western. The open crown is 5 3/4 inches and is creased to a 5 1/8 inch Cattleman. The brim width is 3 inches. The ribbon is a contrasting 3/8 with an OR stye bow...

Looks great, Terry. You always do such nice work. It’s such a tidy western western…it’s just simple and perfectly executed. The slightly lower crown sure paid off. Well done!
