How do folks react to your hat wearing?

Yes, well an umbrella is part of the uniform when one wears a bowler.

Besides, that hat will save up the rain until the brim fills up, and then dump it down the back of your neck.

That’s why bowler-wearing Englishmen always have an umbrella with them.
Okay I’ll admit it - I check the weather app and if there’s rain in the forecast then I wear a rain hat.

A wife who does not like her husband in a hat...grounds for an annulment!

Love the bowler, Gary.

It wouldn't be quite true if I had said that I have never been to Texas. However, hanging around Dallas airport for an eternity, waiting for a flight to Nashville is hardly a sightseeing visit.

Seeing you in your magnificent bowler, we don't call them Derby on our side of the pond, wearing it with aplomb and with a crisp, pin-stripe shirt, I just can't hear a Texan drawl, not even an American accent, all I can hear is that crystal cut-glass (yet pompous) accent that our royals use.

Put your tie and jacket back on and I swear that you could be mistaken for an accountant, bank manager or some city gent working at the stock exchange. Your titfer is just perfect!
(Titfer? Rhyming slang: tit for tat, hat.)

I enjoyed reading your comment. It’s amazing to me how strongly we tend to associate bowlers with certain stereotypes. When I’m wearing mine I get all kinds of comments from people. I’ve been told that it reminds some of the old west, John Clease, steampunk, and even Laurel and Hardy. I also used to associate them more with Laurel and Hardy and similar actors and comedians of old. I now think of it as more casual to business casual. I usually wear it with a t shirt or button down and sweater - hardly ever with a tie.

Thank you for your response and you are right, perhaps there's no other hat quite like the bowler that associates stereotypes.
Maybe it's the hat colour, you rarely see a typical stereotype wearing any colour other than navy blue or black. Your grey version, complete with feather, an adornment not associated with the bowler set, gives the hat much kudos.
It might sound slightly mocking suggesting that colour is an important part of "the uniform." Forgive me if that is so, but I am just as guilty. So many times I have looked at a deep rich burgundy coloured fedora, but I just can't make up my mind if it's 'right.'
Today I wore one of my favourite Aloha shirts, the maker of said shirt, said: "put your new cream coloured, bespoke fedora on," adding, "for me." So many times I have wondered if a burgundy coloured fedora would compliment this shirt. However that's not for today, the lady got her wish.

Always love the Hawaiian shirts from the Mrs...always inspiring! Thank you for the glowing compliments. Bowlers are, indeed, my favorite style. As a university professor, I don't know if I fit the stereotype exactly, but probably close enough :)

I don't go into full dress often, but occassionally I have to clean up. Here are a few with my Cambridge bowler from Northwest Hats.

My family heritage is Scotish, and I love the UK accents, but I have a lifelong Texas accent that won't ever go away. I was once visiting Colorado, stopped at a convenience store and asked for a bag of ice. The female clerk had, for a moment, a jaw dropping expression on her face and then realized, through my Texas drawl, that I was asking for a bag of Ice, not a bag of As*.

Oh my, are you not the reincarnation of a lecturer back in the 1960's, or what? This is Queen Mary College, University of London. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Mary_University_of_London Should you delve into your ancestry, chances are you might find that it's your Alma Mater. There was a professor there who wore exactly that sort of attire.

Actually, away from the humour for a moment, his appearance always had an air of gravitas about him, it was a very useful non-academic lesson. I always wore a collar and tie throughout my management career.

Your Texan accent would be greeted with skepticism given your British appearance, so to ease you in, as it were, here's all you need to know from buying a pint of beer in a pub, to hailing a taxi in the street.

You are too kind, good sir, and thank you again. I do need to put together a Study Abroad course and perhaps I should look more closely at QMUL as an option. My research is rather more mundane than the scholars listed on Wiki, so I won't hold my breath waiting for them to offer me a position!

I took my grandson, then 7 years old, to my office on campus to pick up a few books. Of course, all the faculty and staff go giddy over children when they visit and a small crowd had gathered to talk to the tike. The boy asked what we did here. I answered for the group saying that we read a lot of books and papers and then we tell other people what we read. He replied, "How boring". HA! My colleagues remember that conversation like it was yesterday. I think, deep down, we all cringe a little knowing he was a lot more correct than we wanted to admit!

Thanks also for the helpful translation link. I will salute you tonight with a pint but for now, I'll trundle off for an early morning coffee.

Cheerio .

Contrary to popular opinion, bowlers look very smart with Hawaiian shirts!

The bowler is fascinating for all those reasons. I was born and grew up in Northern Ireland where they are indelibly associated with the Orange Order, not something of which I am enamoured. Over here in England now they carry certain social stereotypes (mind you, increasingly so does wear a tie...). I actually have come to appreciate them only in very recent times, primarily by 'discovering' them in colours other than black. I have a nice brown Christy's one that I hope to wear more this Autumn, though I really need to have it reconformed first, if I can.

Eeeps, you should see how some of them dress now.... and let's not even start on the students. To be fair, though, I've never yet had one of my undergraduates show up in a pair of pajamas. I'd have words if they did.

What is with people and their pyjamas? Have you had a look around your local supermarket of late?

Just to get the thread back on topic. Today I looked in at work, I'm officially off for a few days but needed to have a word with one of the directors. Dressed in striped blazer, collar and tie, you know how I dress, the manageress in charge of the main office looked quite surprised as I walked through. "What no hat?" She said. "It's in the car," I replied, adding "It's hand made and susceptible to the rain." "Not good enough," she replied, I went and got the hat so she could photograph me with her phone. "Is that going on FaceBook?" I enquired. "Could be," she replied with a smile.

Tina had a doctor's appointment this morning, her complaint in one of her legs is restricting her driving, so I was roped into chauffeur duties. After her appointment we went for a coffee and whilst sitting there a youngish fellow came up and said that if he could look so cool, he would wear such a hat.

"What a compliment," I replied, "much appreciated." After he had gone, Tina was grinning like The Cheshire Cat. "What's the joke?" I asked. "You are wearing a pure wool, made to measure, blazer and he notices the hat." She said.
"Don't mock," I chided, "he wouldn't know made to measure from off the peg, or that my beautiful trousers were lovingly made by your own fair hand." "Flatterer!" She said, adding, "don't spill coffee down them."

Here's what the reaction was all about.

Tina needs to go for an x-ray next week, it's a concern but at least we know it's not the thrombotic vein.
Looks like I shall be on chauffeur duties again.

I hope it is nothing as well. And I hope it is not affecting her dancing!

Some things turn out to be nothing.

We sincerely hope this is one of those.

Gentlemen, and you are, truly, gentlemen, Tina likes to read Lounger's remarks, she can be rather shy when it comes to contributing though, but later on today I shall tease her, asking if she's going to get her royalties from The Lounge.
Thank you all very much, it's a privilege to be part of this community.

You find those Guinness hat photos and I will keep you and others posted of her progress. It is a concern of course but having the threat, or risk of thrombosis ruled out, has lifted our spirits. We shall see what the x-ray shows and go from there.

@Rmccamey I have to say, you look wonderful in a bowler. Your side profile, you look like you and that hat were made for each other.

@GHT Reading your posts across the Lounge, your wife sounds like a charming woman and delightful companion. I wish her a speedy recovery and you both good health.
