Is it because the sleeves always get caught? If so, I just reversed looped the cinching tab. Not D rings but the buckle also doesn't catch and scratch the sleeves.

isn't that small curved tab/ tongue thing on the buckle meant to run the leather belt around it to bite into the strap and friction brake it? when used like the lower pic there it does look nice but it always slides loose with wear especially when pressure is applied like when you wear it as side buckle and you wear the jacket to squat or to reach forward, the waist strap will slide off the buckle

Most of the friction happens around the U bend. The tongue does check things in place, sort of, but it also catch onto the sleeves. I just loop it the reverse way, but it works the same as looping from the top. D rings are better because its round and smooth and there is nothing sticking out to catch onto something.

I don't use my cinches, especially on the Highwayman, it will give the unflattering balloon look when it's pulled in. The Premier Highwayman is slim enough and the regular Highwayman I just learned to live with the bigger hem, or eat more donuts.
