Where in this godforsaken world can I find a good black plush top hat, in 7 5/8 or 7 3/4 for less than $300? New, repro , vintage. I don't care so long as it's not wool. Or am I just delusional?

Speaking strictly for vintage, hats in larger sizes usually receive a premium price through the typical channel of eBay. Add in the fact you want a silk plush topper in good condition for $300 shipped, yeah, you're probably approaching delusional territory. If you search the European market you'll probably have a higher chance of success of even finding one that meets your size and condition criteria, but shipping is going to kill you.

Given your location in the northeast I think your best bet would be at estate sales/auctions.
