Stylish US Army trench from "A Foreign Affair".

Yes, the US Army trench in olive green that predated the switch to the forest green AG44 spec in the 60s. I've had a couple of the latter, and they fit in very well with a civilian look of a decade of two earlier. I'd definitely like to have one of the lighter green, earlier spec models, but originals are now priced as collectables, and I've never seen one in my size. Nobody seems to reproduce them that I can find, yet. I suppose it will as ever take a big budget movie to stimulate that, given the focus on fieldwear for the reenactors.

This is the cover of a book but it's the photo which is useful. The small flap on the upper right chest of men's trench coats is often called a "g.u.n. flap" by marketing and clothing people but it's really a "rain flap." As you can see in the photo, the WW1 era US officer has buttoned his lapels right to the top button, and the flap has been buttoned down over the top of the lapel. This keeps the rain from dripping/seeping down between the lapels. There is no need for this flap on the left side, hence why most trench coats don't have a rain flap on the left side.

Yep. Seems the g'unflap terminology is a misnomer, presumably because it bears a passing visual resemblance to the patch on a shooting jacket designed to prevent a ***** but.t causing excess wear. Utilitarian purpose, stops rain getting in down the top. I have seen a few like Bogie's that have the flap on both sides, though that presumably is a purely cosmetic choice, not unlike having that other row of buttons on a DB these days.
