What does the J stand for in Buco jackets?

J23, J24…. I’m assuming the J stands for “Joseph”, after the founder, but wanted to check?

My guess is early on, “J” did likely mean “jacket” in models like J-21, J-23, J-24; all upper-body leather garments.

Later, “J” was then used across different leather gear, eg. J-99 (leather trousers).

This shift reflects how Buco (and Joseph Buegeleisen Co.) reused the “J” prefix as a general series identifier, not strictly tied to jackets; much like part numbers in a catalog.

So “J” started as “jacket” but evolved into Buco’s standard prefix for leather apparel, including pants.

Kind of like how Levi’s “501” series refers to jeans, but the number itself doesn’t tell you what part of the body it covers, it just signals “from this line.”

I think they did - just minor variations, J23 may be a nylon lined version of a J22 then a J24 is a J23 but with a map pocket.
