Me neither. I’ve probably mentioned before that in looking into what might have become of an old friend/acquaintance/coworker/etc. I find that said person has either died or that our mutual acquaintances, who might cast some light on the matter, have died themselves.

The generation ahead of me is almost entirely gone now. My nonagenarian mother (she had us young; married at 17, widowed with three babies at 21) is still with us, as are a couple of aunts, but my last surviving uncles both died recently — one a few months back, the other last week.

Among the advantages of advancing years has been, in my case, a growing awareness of what I do not know, which, as it turns out, is almost everything. I know a little bit about a few things, and quite a bit about far fewer things, but I defer to those with real expertise in their particular fields to hold forth on those matters. It’s liberating, really, this not having to have an opinion, this not having to burden myself with it.

I’m reminded of what I heard many years ago: You had better consult with the youngsters now, while they still know everything.

Here's something I find just plain odd. My late wife had an older sister and two older brothers. The sister moved here to California in the mid-70s with my wife and their parents; the brothers, already having made lives for themselves and their families, remained in the suburbs south of Chicago. The younger of the two brothers, John, was diabetic and had quite a few health problems while trying to manage the disease, and he in fact died not long before my wife. Less than six months after my wife died we received word that John's wife Cathy, who had appeared to be in good health except for her weight, died as well; I still don't know the cause of her death. During the time they were married John and Cathy produced two sons, John Jr. and Danny. They both grew up to be strong, reliable young men, but I just found out they had both died not long after my wife did. Not being a family member by blood I feel it's not my place to pry, but no members of the family are volunteering any information, so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If I'm remembering correctly her brother and his wife were in their mid- to late-70s and their sons were in their 40s, so neither young nor particularly old (in my opinion). On the other hand, they were all somewhat overweight and they each consumed quite a lot of alcohol (and other "perception altering" substances), so without knowing exactly how each of them died it's difficult to say. My sister-in-law still lives here in southern California with her husband, but their family seems to get kinda' distant with people like me who married into their family after the direct family member passes on, and sis-in-law and I were never really close anyway, so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’ve grown quite attached to people who were once in-laws, as well as members of their birth families. I have maintained regular contact with a few such shirttail relatives, one of whom resided in my ADU during his physical decline. (Brothers out-law, we called each other. He died three years ago.) Another was one of my brother’s ex-wives. I always liked her, and her family. She and her sister were welcoming to me and my wife, who came into my life long after my brother’s divorce. I was deeply saddened when her 98-year-old mother shuffled off a few months back.
I take marriage seriously, which is among the reasons I didn’t enter into it until I was 44. It wasn’t that I wouldn’t have married sooner, but the women I might have wished to marry didn’t wish that with me, and vice-versa. My marriage is now well into its third decade and like all marriages of such duration it has had its seasons. But our mutual commitment to it has seen us through. We have few secrets.

Not difficult to say. The surely messed up their heart, so heart failure from drugs.

I have everything that I wanted as a teenager, only fifty years later.

I don't have to go to school or work.
I get an allowance every month.
I own my own house. (No mortgage.)
I don't have a curfew.
I have a driver's licence and my own car. (Paid for.)
And I don't have acne.
Getting old has it's compensations!
