Considering a Vanson Maverick Jean Jacket

Hey everyone, hope ya'll are staying cool. In the northeastern U.S. right now, it's hot as hell. So hot that scientists have warned that merely thinking about wearing a leather jacket can cause severe heat stroke. (I assume just about everyone here is in the northern hemisphere. Heard Europe is just as hot, maybe even hotter.)

I'm thinking about ordering a Vanson Maverick when they do their sale near the end of the summer. (Quirky organization on their website; I notice the Maverick can be found only under the "Leather Garments" section, not in the "traditional" section.) Anyways, I am a bit concerned about the fit. Chest is 38, but I wear a 40 in the Schott Perfecto, which is a perfect fit. I heard Vanson has looonnnng sleeves. I like the sleeves long, but only to the mid-palm. Any longer and it gets ***bersome. Do you think the 38 or the 40 would fit better? Vanson says it has 4.5 inches of chest ease in this jacket. I like to wear my leather jackets with an undershirt plus a flannel shirt. The 38 would have 42.5 chest ease. Which might be a bit tight. The 40 would be 44.5 chest ease, which might fit great in the chest, but the sleeves might be too long. What do you think?

I'll share my experience from a couple weeks back when I visited the Vanson shop during which I tried on a size 40 Maverick for the purposes of placing a custom order. Might help to inform your decision.

I have about a 41" chest measurement, weigh about 170 pounds, and am right around 5' 10" tall. Lean but not overly muscular build. Also, I generally do well with a sleeve measurement of between 24" and 24.5". Sleeves of around 25.5" start to fall around my knuckles.

Jacket measurements that usually work well for me:
pit to pit: 22" to 23". 22.5" seems to be my sweet spot.
Shoulders: 18" to 19"
sleeve: 24" to 24.5"
hem width: around 20"
body length: really depends on the jacket but around 24". A Maverick size 40 might even be a little shorter than that but I didn't measure.

The jacket I tried on was in the firenze leather, which is their mid weight option. Additionally, while my shirt was untucked I did take note that the bottom hem landed right around belt height. For reference most of my pants etc are mid rise. I add all this because the Maverick is fairly short in the body as a type iii type jacket should fit. As you can see in the first picture the sleeve length is pretty spot on. Generally I think the fit looked great, and so I didn't really take specific measurements as it seemed like the standard pattern in size 40 would give me the fit I wanted without any alteration. Most importantly though the fit of the jacket felt right on body. Fitted without excess material but comfortable. Good range of motion which more basic styles like this don't always provide in the way that more motorcycle oriented jackets with action backs, gussets etc can.

The last piece I'll add for your consideration is about the collar. You might notice in particular the second picture that the collar is quite small. At least it felt that way in comparison to other jackets I'm familiar with. Anyways I asked for the collar to be extended by .5". I was advised that any additional length beyond that might not look right. It's not a big adjustment but I think it will add just a little extra to the overall look. For what it's worth there was a small upcharge for this change.

Thanks so much for all this info! This does indeed help tremendously.

That 40 fit you great. Surprised that you went with a custom order, although I do see what you mean about the collar looking a bit small.

I'm about the same height but 153 lbs. Based on your report, I'm now thinking that the 38 would fit me really well. If the 40 fits you so well, it's got to be too big on me. You saved me a return headache! I really hate returning anything I buy on the internet. It's such a pain in the *** to return stuff. I usually just keep whatever comes, unless it's just totally useless or damaged.

Understand completely what you mean about dealing with returns. Happy to share my experience with you, even more if it can help you to make the right choice.

I actually have a black type iii jacket from Schott that I love. The custom order I placed is with a really beautiful blue colored horse hide from Maryam tannery.

Vanson had their Summer sale (10% off) back in early July (4-7). I obtained a Maverick in Granite Roma Leather in size 44. Last year I bought a Maverick in Brandy Roma in size 46 and the only real difference (besides the leather color) is the torso and shoulders which are of course bigger on the 46 compared to the 44. I measured the sleeve length (underarm to cuff) at 19" and 19.25" so the difference is minimal and the cuff comes to about the same place with either jacket.

The 44 was readily available so I got that and the fit is nearly ideal compared to the 46 which is more generous but fits well enough. The Granite is not nearly as grainy as the 46 and will take lots of seasoning/wear to become anywhere near the character of the Brandy one. The Maverick is a great jacket and built for the long haul which is why I have three of them!

It's very nice, great buy!

I have a couple of leather trucker jackets already also. But this will be my first Vanson. What I like about the Maverick is that it's got all snaps, no zippers. The ones that I have right now, from Hillside and Legendary USA, have got zips.

The funny thing is that I didn't even know Vanson made this Maverick jacket until I kept seeing it on the Fedora Lounge and did a search on their site. It's kind of buried on their website under the "Leather Garments" section. I was mostly perusing their "Traditional" and police sections, so I'd missed it at first.
