Car coats - are they out of fashion now?!

What do you guys think? How many of you still own and wear a car coat regularly? Which brand/model? Pics would be amazing!

The title says: "Are car coats out of fashion?" When the coat in question was designed over a 100 years ago in the 1920's, is it ever going to be "in fashion?"

I don't care if they will ever be in "fashion" but I'm a fan. This is an awesome coat. Do you by chance know anything about it?

The coat may not be as old as the design, meaning it' could be made to an original pattern. What it
does do though, is go so well with my classic MG. The only label is one that says it's Italian made.
If you are UK based, come along to The Goodwood Revival, https://www.goodwood.com/motorsport/goodwood-revival/ you can check out past events on that link.
You might even come across the stall holder.

I’m right there with ya, mate! I think they look cool and are practical as well.

If I could a nice one with. Slight 70s vibe I’d probably get it. Most look to be very boxy, which makes sense for the purpose, but I’d still prefer to get one that’s just a little more fitted at the waist

@Bfd70 I've also been thinking about a car coat for a long time now. Currently considering this one but I'm not a fan of the tiny chest pocket..
Otherwise very nice, good price for a known model Y2, my size..
Thoughts? How bad is the tiny pocket? Should I compromise?

I own one of these in black. Fits perfectly, but I hardly ever wear it. I find the back a little busy. Still reluctant to sell it, because it could be useful on formal occasions. The chest pocket is useless, not so much because of the size, but because it's out of reach.

I remember a guy I knew about 20 years ago, he owned a open top Morgan he used to wear a long car coat and a floppy wool hat and goggles, so classic look

Interesting to hear that you own one of these!
Yeah the chest pocket seems mainly decorative, but I don't particularly like the look of it.
I'd much rather have the front western yoke like the HNC-82, which is probably my favorite Y2 car coat model.
The back IS a bit busy with the mid seam and the shoulder gussets, but I'm assuming the shoulder gussets are quite functional and useful?
The half belt I don't mind.
And I do like it better than the typical T shaped back from Y2 car coats. (EC-76, DC-76, EC-77)
Can you share some fit pics of this jacket? Maybe it will inspire you to wear it more :)
I have until Saturday/Sunday to decide as that's when the auction and the 10% FJP discount ends.

The military style car coat was always on my wish list, but the price of them was so expensive, the purchase of one couldn't be justified. A year or so ago, talking to a trader, he told me that the reason for the high price was that the leather was made from horse hide. Whether that's true or not, I have never bothered to check. Finding out won't bring the price down.

Fits perfectly
Jeez you weren't kidding there, 10/10 fit if I may say so.
But the tiny pocket and the pocket triangles.. Hmm..
The back looks great in my opinion.
I'd definitely prefer the HNC-82, but you take what you get.
The LS-15 I'm looking at is ~250eur / ~300$, no way I'm ever finding a HNC-82 at that price.
Have to make compromises somewhere..

Wow these are a wonderful collection!! Wish I bought the aero mariner before it was out of production - it’s such a rare model now! And the shearling lined barnstormer looks just like the one I ordered and sold (with much regret)!!

Old post now, I know, but... always worth asking. Aero do rotate some models that aren't sellers out of the range on the website here and there (I've notice a couple in recent years), but it can't hurt to ask if they might do one as they'll likely still have the patterns on file. Bearing in mind the made to order model doesn't mean they have to make a certain minimum run in order to make it worthwhile. Of course there can be other reasons a model was retired, but never hurts to ask.

The closest I've seen otherwise is the Schott 740N in leather. More than I'd be willing to pay new, but lots of them kicking around on the used market on eBay...

It's a very personal call, of course, but I really like it. I like the look of the chest pocket, even if it's not much use for anything going in there. May or may not take a phone, but it would certainly take my mp3 player, which would be a big bonus as a travel jacket. I don't imagine I'd miss the top pocket as storage space, given those two, big hip pockets. I like the detailing on this model; I could see wearing it in place of a blazer when it's too cold for a blazer and too warm for a blazer and overcoat. A sort of sporty 40s look, though I'm sure it would work equally well with jeans and boots.

I've seen Irvin-style jackets with horse-trim panels (moreso B3s), though with this sort of civilian adaptation I'd bed surprised if it hadn't been replaced with cow. In my understanding, the really expensive bit these days is the sheepskin of the main panels (the exterior being the treated, dyed and coated underside of the shearling - the shell of this style is a single layer, the fleece is the underside of it, not a separate lining). I remember the prices of shearling styles started shooting up a few years ago, all manufacturers citing increased cost of the sheepskins as the reason.

At least that's so for what Tom Hardy is wearing here. The Veston on the right, claimed as "real sheepskin", is currently on sale on Amazon UK, new, for £23.01, so what might arrive when ordered who knows!! Bargains can be found, though, if you are happy with the civilian style variants and shop around on eBay. Cirrus is one name to look out for. Similar to the Aviation Leathercraft line, but often overlooked on the used market as less well known. (Similar to how I once bought a Grenfell trench cot on eBay for buttons because most people were chasing the cachet of the Burberry name. Gold top also do a very nice option, though currently sold out. https://goldtop.co.uk/collections/jackets/products/sheepskin-flying-jacket?variant=41060798628011 I might have weakened before now had it not had the handwarmer pockets, though if approached as a purely civilian jacket it still looks great. If they did a black one of these I'd jump on it. I know someone who has one, and they are very nice.

Thank for the comment Edward!
I wouldn't miss the chest pocket space either, it just looks a bit off to me.
Overcoats and blazers are completely foreign topics for me haha. In my head it's more simple - jackets and coats.
I imagine this working real weal with my wide green cargo pants or the wool pants:

Not so much with denim, but maybe.

I agree about the HNC-82: it looks fantastic. Luckily for me, it's hard to find in Europe.
Here are some fit picks. They are far from recent, but I haven't changed .
Size is 40. Although it fits slim, the shoulder gussets do provide movability.

Wow! That looks stunning. In the product pics, these always looked a bit shorter than a traditional car coat, but that looks just perfect!
