Mistakes are made. It's how they handle the mistake that matters.

I bought these shoes last month. They came with a defect out of the box. I didn't notice. That was my mistake. I should have seen it during my initial inspection.

I wore the shoes. I finally noticed yesterday as I was brushing them. I called Red Wing this morning. Customer service got all of my information, then sent me an email. I replied with some photos. After a few hours, I got my answer. They are going to replace the shoes. I thought that I would send them back, and they would repair the shoe. It's a simple stitch. I could have fixed them myself with a needle and thread.

They e-mailed me return instructions, a return form to ship in the box with the shoes, and a UPS shipping label so that I don't have to pay for the shipping. I'll post a blank copy of the return form in case anyone is interested in what it looks like.

I took a chance and ordered factory seconds. I bought them from Sierra. Sierra is a TJX company. Orders ship with return labels in case you are not satisfied with the product.

The backstay, on the right boot, is off-center. It covers the back seam stitch. It is not structural, and will not effect the performance of the shoe. I can live with that.

What I can tell you is that these boots are comfortable right out of the box. My feet will not hurt as I break them in. They don't feel heavy. The sole is a comfortable step, not hard. Traction is acceptable. These soles are not going to be for combat. I will not be running over uneven terrain, with loose dirt and gravel. Well constructed and robust with a leather insole and leather midsole. 270 degree Goodyear welt.

The Beckman is a good boot. Hard to say if it's worth $400, when compared to an Iron Ranger or Blacksmith. You do get a leather midsole. You don't get the toe cap. It's a different last, which is supposed to be true to size. I am wearing my Brannock size.

I’ve had a couple of pairs of the 875 moc toe boots, and although I love the style I’ve had to give up on them as they were never, and i do mean never, comfortable. I had to go with a half size down to get the right fit in them, but even after a year of wear they were stiff, heavy and I was never not aware of them.

On the other hand the iron rangers have been good from the get go for me (a full size down - which felt weird to do, but is right for me). Can highly recommend the rough out version, which was the very most comfortable out of the different leathers I tried.

Would be very interested to hear what the new engineer boots or Pecos are like if anyone has bought them yet?

Red Wing roughout leather is very comfortable. My problem is that it's so hard to care for. At least with my lifestyle. Every little drop of orange chicken sauce, blood, motor oil, vomit....... soaks in and I can never get it out. I've tried suede shampoo, wire brushes, etc. The roughout side of the leather just isn't like the grain side.

Fit is always interesting to me. I have always heard about sizing down. On my feet, my Brannock size fits fine. My toes aren't at the end of the boot. I have that thumb's width of space. My toes are not squished. The ball of my foot sits evenly with, and flexes with, the wide part of the shoe where it is suppose to flex.

I guess we all have different feet.

My latest Red Wing. Not a Heritage model. A work boot. A shoe that you can go to work in. A shoe that is tough enough to wear at the dishwashing station of Panda Express. Grease, sludge, food waste, heat, steam, standing water, chemicals.......... And I wanted a boot that I could ride a motorcycle with. Rigid and surefooted enough to come to a stop on a Harley, plant both feet on the pavement, and feel stable.

Good or bad. Right or wrong. I chose this boot because it was on sale. Not every Red Wing has to be a Heritage model. It's Made In USA. And resoleable. There are advantages to the synthetic technologies. Softer step. Easier to break in. More resistant to corrosive agents. Synthetics which are more durable and won't rot or corrode like leather and cork. This is the shoe that I want when I have to work on plumbing, perform auto maintenance, or step into barnyard muck. With this boot, I can scrub it and hose it off. The SuperSole is direct attached to the PVC welt, which means that no water is going to leak through delaminating glue and loose stitches.

Very fast, free shipping. I ordered on Monday, and it arrived on Thursday.

I like the leather lined footbed. That was not mentioned in the web description. In person, up close, the SuperSole are amazing. They look and feel durable and grippy. I will not slip in the rain, or on a greasy, oily, tile floor.

Here is what they look like. Now, I will just have to clean off the dust, oil them, and wear them.

I have a pair of rough out Iron Rangers and gave them a going over with walking boot treatment, can't remember which. They aren't exactly rough out now as they have a slight sheen but it avoids all the stains! On the other hand, the stains show they've been around the block a few times...

I used those for work for years. Good boot.
