The problem with Johnson Leathers is that their one jacket for me was so good that I almost never wear another leather jacket and even getting another one from them almost feels like a waste for that reason.
Brother you are speaking my language but I’m trying man sometimes I just look at them other times I think should I make another lmao I might make a peacoat for Christmas who knows

I know how you guys feel. Love JL. Started with 1 highly custom design…then bought 4 more. Now have 5 and can’t find the time to wear them all. 1st world problem.

The overall look and quality exceed expectations when they arrive.

Concur. I have 3 JL jackets and the quality is top top shelf. Cannot understand the attraction to Japanese overpriced stuff.

Well honestly as long as everyone is happy with there purchase it’s all good for me the second they said if you can imagine it we can make I was sold .short story I bought an aero sunburst brand new made to order it was in Vicenza natural I’m not sure what happened but first time wearing it I got a weird mark on it I’m not going to go into huge detail but I was not happy I know it’s a natural leather but it was an odd mark and I over reacted but I come on here and someone pointed me into the direction of Jl I called them and said could u help them it hit me can you swap out the yoke for another leather they did it and then I lost my mind lol and order what could possibly be 10 jackets

JL would be my 2nd choice after a custom Vanson in my own supplied leather if I'd ever order something from the US. But the stuff on their website definitely looks rather uninspiring compared to what I have seen on TFL. From example @3.14nche type 1.

I know the feeling. Each jacket I had from them is a masterpiece. I just have different styles

Definitely!

And this isn’t actually a dig at other makers. If my first Aero had been what I wanted, rather than what Thurston decided suited me better, I would have stopped there.

Disclaimer: noob doing a review. I don't normally start threads but I want to highlight the work of Johnson Leathers of San Francisco

hey guys, I would like to share my new JL jacket (it's my 3rd with them). JL is local to me and I'm lucky to be within such a short distance from their shop. I've been treated well and it's always a pleasure doing projects with them. They have been offering more and more options regarding to the hides/hardware/lining they offer so I'm sure they will be getting more business from me in the future.

The jacket is made with their new offering of Masaye HH (a 2.75oz midweight vegetable tanned horse hide out of Germany which used olive leaves with the tanning process with JL adding a sheen once the jacket is made). I don't know if it's full aniline or semi aniline but it is dyed through. I did notice what seems to be blue grayish fibers when I inspected the zipper pulls. The leather itself is soft to the touch. I don't have a lot of experience handling different kinds of Leather but with what I have in my closet i would say it's less stiff than a shinki, definitley won't stand on its own like a cxl, in saying that it feels like a heavyweight goat. It is very easy wearing for sure and just the right weight for my local climate. It's a good windbreaker and it does repel water well when I tried splashing water on it probably because of the added sheen which probably means a light coat of paint? The sheen will eventually fade according to JL so that will be interesting to see over time. What I have on my jacket is a mixed smooth/grainy batch but I see a lot more grainy to be honest which I like, hope more grain pops out when the seen wears off.

Hardware is #5 repro talon in brass
Shell made from cotton lining from Japan (dunno what it's called)
Black satin in the sleeves
Leather strip to bottom sweep to protect liner
Small gauntlet looking design to the outer sleeve (@ton312 inpired)
Zipper sleeves on the inside sleeve panel (loved this from my FL CR jacket)
Interior pocket to left chest
Hidden size tag and made in USA tag
Subtle single point western yoke
Collar is 4" at its widest point

This jacket is probably going to be one of my grab and go jacket, it wears easy and just a simple clean looking black jacket that seems easy to dress up/down.
Maybe I should have added a little bit on the back length but maybe it's because I'm not used to wearing such a short jacket and I hate tucking my shirt too lol

Here you go (pretty overcast so sorry for the bad lighting)

Not a fan of the styles currently on the website but JL seems to be well regarded here. Looks like the founder has the first name "Johnson" and is a tailor from China.

JL is a top American Maker in my view. I have many jackets, few can top them. Johnson's is one of few makers who can, and I trust, to make me just about any iconic design. Personally, I love their take on the Peters. Furthermore, their selection of hides is phenomenal. They produced a Japanese line that is at the highest level of Japanese quality and craftsmanship. I personally own several westride jackets and American market small run productions. My favorite is a utility jacket made for me with the aid of Johnson himself. I took that jacket on my BMW GS 1200 from Paris to Astana.
