Schott 519 black color bleaching out?

Hi,

I plan to purchase a Schott Perfecto jacket from the Schott NYC Flagship store.

However I recently heard that that the black leather of this particular model would bleach out rather quickly.

Since I live in Europe exchanging the jacket could be rather difficult.

Can any1 who owns this model confirm this?

It's funny that you say that because the complaint of people online is actually the opposite, that Schott Perfectos keep their rich black instead of turning beige.


Only very few of their models have fading leather (because of customer requests) and they are clearly labeled.

If you tell me which jacket style you are after, I can give you models to look at. To start with, all versions of the 613, 618, 118, 141, and 641 keep their rich black color no matter what.

I am am thinking of getting the 519 (or maybe the 118).
The p613s (in Burgundy) looks nice as well but is probablyvtoo heavy for my purpose.

Skip the 519 because the sizing has fewer options. Get the 613S instead (same jacket fit, but with numbered sizing) or the 118 (runs a size bigger, the leather is like a better version of the 519 leather).

I am not planning to use the jacket for bike riding. So I was thinking that the 118 or the p613s would be too heavy for casual wearing.

All of these, including the 519, will feel heavy compared to fashion jackets. But they are cut so well that when you are wearing them, it feels more like a blanket.

The P613S is Horween Chromexcel so it will feel like cardboard at first. It is a nice jacket, but I don't think that is what you are looking for.

If you want a soft draping leather, the 118 will be ideal.

I have a 519 from 2015 & I love it. It is soft & durable at the same time. The color on this jacket does not bleach. The weight of this leather is lighter than my Aero FQHH CXL, Vanson & Langlitz. It is the most comfortable leather jacket I own.

I also have a 519 that I have owned for almost 2 years. It is very soft and supple pebbled leather. Solid black and no bleaching. It is not teacore leather like CXL where the color changes when the top layer wears.

I like the 519 but I would still recommend the 613S (exactly the same pattern, but in numbered sizes) and 118 (similarly soft/pliable leather, but improved pattern for comfort) over it, unless someone wants a brown jacket which the latter two models are not available as.

I like the 613S a lot. I am not a fan of the underarm footballs on the 118.

I'm a little confused by what you call "bleach out".

Do you mean that the dye in the leather is reduced/diminished by exposure to rain and perhaps direct sun?

Or do you mean that when the surface of the leather is "scuffed", underlying un-dyed leather is exposed?

While some prefer the "distressed" look of a leather jacket (Patina, some call it), I don't.

I would not knowing buy an expensive leather item, such as a jacket, which failed to have the leather "vat dyed" which means that the dye was applied throughout the entire thickness of the leather. In such "vat-dyed" cases, scuffing only removes the surface finish layer, but the jacket remains same basic color.

As a side note, if the very top surface finish of most jackets is removed or "scuffed-off", the intrinsic water-resistance of the leather finish is impaired, since water will leak through where the water-resistant surface finish was removed.

Various dyes and "topical" leather treatments exist. "Topical" chems may/may not contain dye, but provide a surface Acrylic coating to the leather, replacing the outer water-resistant coating which was "scuffed-off".

It's your money, and your jacket, therefore your choice. Just stating my personal views, and some folks will differ in their opinions.

OTOH, I believe that the factual parts of this post speak for themselves. If I'm wrong on the facts, please correct me.

Okay, in that case focus on the 613S and 613SH. The 519 pattern is based on the 613S but it's not quite as comfortable.

I'm a little confused by what you call "bleach out".

He means fading obviously, which most people here used to like though I think less so now.

519 is my favorite travel jacket. It has just enough pockets to hold the things I carry. It has a thin lining to keep warm down to 32 degrees F but not overly warm that I can warm it up to 60 degrees F.
