Hercules- unusual hide for a Hercules. Not one I have handled or seen, either with a Herc or OG maker label. Not a west coast jacket. Maybe Fried-Osterman or Appalachian. Based on the hide, I want to add Blatt to the possibilities. The only time I have seen a similar hide and build is on a Blatt MC jacket.

Late to the party to respond but that’s Rough Wear’s horsehide label. The shown Hercules jacket was made by Rough Wear, one of the 2 most prolific makers for Hercules. Their signature was French seams everywhere, as observed on the shown Hercules.

Oh man, you might be right!

I wondered why this jacket was so soft - it's waay softer than any other jacket in my collection EXCEPT the one lambskin mall jacket.

Plus the graining seems unique. It really doesn't look like any of my other jackets.

I can't find reference to Montgomery Ward making sheepskin MC jackets but this is made for a child so maybe?

I’d put money on that it’s horsehide. I have 2 vintage (Kit Karson, Star Glove) and 1 repro jackets that are horsehide but buttery soft like sheepskin. Actually they might even be softer than sheepskin, more like the lambskin jacket that I used to own. I was surprised at first too when I learned that horsehide could be processed/ tanned to be so soft. Below is a photo of the Kit Karson’s grains for comparison, not unlike yours. Some leather panels on your jacket appear to have unique grains, but they are not consistent throughout the jacket. Other panels remain pretty smooth. The grains are nice regardless.

Gap trucker again. This thing is such a nice weight… heavy enough to provide some warmth and sense of quality, but light enough that if the temp goes up during the day you don't start regretting wearing the thing.

I have the same jacket. I agree, it is surprisingly good quality and actually gets the most compliments of any of my jackets. I haven't tried it in cool weather yet, but I wore it all summer up until around 90 degrees.

I only wish there was an inside pocket!

I had looked for one about a year ago but came up empty handed. It was actually your posts this summer that reminded me to keep looking. Guess I owe you one!

Definitely agree about the pocket. Might see what my tailor can do.

Glad to hear I was able to help you find a good one. This is why I feel posting even non-high end jackets on TFL is a contribution. These old Gap truckers are great jackets especially for the price (I got mine for $80).

Glad also to hear you have a tailor you can trust with alterations (I do not :( ) I'm interested to see the result if you do go that route.

I own the original manufacturers version of this jacket. I can confirm it’s sheepskin and most definitely not horsehide. Your Windward was made by Cagleco Sportswear (Ralph Edwards), which later became Ralph Edwards Sportswear. It is a youth jacket just like yours.

Sweet, thanks for verifying. Good to know that it is sheepskin.

So i've got two Caglecos: this one and a 1957 Cagleco G-1 (goat).

My skin requires sun protection. This Gap trucker provides that and is surprisingly porous. I need something sturdy like this for work.

As an aside, I have actually found 100% linen to be an inferior fabric for the heat. Maybe if it is very loosely woven, but in my experience, linen is really not very porous.

A much better choice (other than some specific Thai fabrics) is a 50/50 linen/cotton blend (or even linen/wool/silk). If the temps are above 90 (or maybe 85 on a humid day), I switch to something like that.
