Would like to revive this thread. My heart is telling me i want a car coat. My head is saying i’m nuts. Post up pics of yours or great ones found. Help my heart win. It’s the holidays after all.
Once again you and I are on exactly the same wavelength! I have been itching to pull the trigger on a car coat for at least a year now, but have yet to do so. There aren’t nearly as many options when it comes to this style of jacket in leather, and I have yet to see it online that really grabs me.
I do really like that Mr. Freedom Car coat. that you posted and I have come close to pulling the trigger on that one a couple times.

26 degrees!?!
if only someone hadn’t sold their perfectly warm, perfect fit IH N-1 last year…
you know, I’ve gotta give you a hard time about that, but seriously maybe you made room in the closet for that Mr. freedom leather coat.

Fair play!
But i did replace with an RMC n1.

Now, how bout color?
Black is the classic but also in certain circles has a little bit of “wise guy” undertones. Does brown defeat this?

@Bfd70 I've also been thinking about a car coat for a long time now. Currently considering this one but I'm not a fan of the tiny chest pocket..
Otherwise very nice, good price for a known model Y2, my size..
Thoughts? How bad is the tiny pocket? Should I compromise?

To me this is a long halfbelt, not a car coat. Car coats do not have a belted back.

Man the Torpedo looks good on you, it’s actually really nice to see it worn by someone I know because I get a better feel for the jacket.
The collar and lapel look a little small to me, did it seem that way when you were trying it on Marc?

Holy Sh#t!
Forget about the torpedo, now all I can think about is that double helix in the top shot. I’m thinking that is my new target for a car coat, what do you say @Bfd70, wanna be jacket bros again?

I'm interested in giving one a try, but haven't found the right one yet.
I've almost bought a couple different deerskin car coats on Ebay recently but ultimately wasn't happy about their measurements.

Simmons Bilt’s car coat is a good option. I like car coats because they’re semi-formal/smart casual and perfect for colder weather. I also reckon that they’re sometimes preferable to zip fronts on some/those of us who are older (but this might be because they seem more formal to me). I had a Mariner which I finally sold - to me, there’s just too much heft to a double-breasted leather peacoat and I think that the style works better in wool. Car coats, though, are just about the right type of heavy material reality for me, although I’ve seen some great Mariners on here over the years.

Also, any double breasted coat or jacket really only looks good when it’s fastened up. Otherwise there’s too much material left hanging around the front and the whole thing will look unbalanced or lopsided.

It’s for these reasons that if I were in the market for a long leather coat I’d always choose an Aero Leather Cheyenne over their Barnstormer.

Also, in a heavy coat it’s an advantage to be able to wear it undone if things get too warm.

"I remember a guy I knew about 20 years ago, he owned a open top Morgan he used to wear a long car coat and a floppy wool hat and goggles, so classic look."

The military style car coat was always on my wish list, but the price of them was so expensive, the purchase of one couldn't be justified. A year or so ago, talking to a trader, he told me that the reason for the high price was that the leather was made from horse hide. Whether that's true or not, I have never bothered to check. Finding out won't bring the price down.

Now that's a nicer look, you see the 40s event Jeep guys wearing sheepskin driving them
