Taubers of California

It was on Etsy. It sold. Then, it was returned. It was on for awhile again after that. I finally bought it, but then nothing happened. It never shipped. I couldn’t get ahold of the woman who was selling it. So I did some digging. This is how I came across the fact that it had been sold before. So, I thought that I had been ****med. I wrote several messages, but still couldn’t get the seller to communicate with me. I had to open a case against her. It was a long process. They side with the seller very strongly on Etsy. Finally she got back to me and explained she had been in the hospital. She told me the story of it being bought and retuned. She sent me the jacket. All in all it took about a month. Haha. So, I worked for this jacket. It’s really nice though.

Early 50’s (I think) Taubers. No hide distinction. Horse seems likely, right? Pretty much new. I wouldn’t even say this is broken in really. Strange though bc the zipper appears to be not original, although I think Taubers did use C&C (crown zips) so perhaps they did the repair job themselves. It’s a very clean job and an old Talon zipper pull was in the pocket. Doesn’t seem a zipper would fail on a jacket that hasn’t been worn much…
Wow, stellar jacket! Shoot me a message if you ever decide to move it on!

I do have some Taubers. Some came in the crown type and other with Talon. Even the big #10 zips fail often. However, the zip looks original to the jacket. If you would like a closer opinion about the zipper, post several close-ups of the zipper pull and slider, as well as the sewing job on the zip. There is a wealth of information from members here that can stop an original zipper job.

Hopefully these help. Let me know if you need something else. The last pic shows the zipper pull I found in the pocket.

Adding in my own little update here. I have a Taubers now in hand, this one being a newer model with the orange on black tag, and no "Horse Hide" tag or indication anywhere. Someone has tried to "lengthen" the back by sewing in place on the lower back at the kidney panel section. Other than that addition, this jacket was dry, but in good shape when it arrived. I have given it a good conditioning this afternoon, and will take better, outside photos tomorrow.

This jacket is too small for me. I took a chance from the ebay seller with minimal dimesons provided. So it will be going up for sale soon. Meanwhile, here's some as-received photos of this nice cross zip jacket:

Terry - Similar to mine. I was surprised to see YKK zipper. Thought it was a replacement until I checked pocket zippers…. Yep YKK.
I was just handling a couple of Taubers jacket that are going to market. I like that model you have. The use of the YKK zippers would help date those jackets. I think I've seen a mix, but the leather changed, never cheap though, just reflected the interest of the times. They didn't start till 1941, but outlasted many, many makers.

I'll have a few posts over the next few weeks of Taubers I have seen this year in my personal search. (In other news, get in touch if you have a Taubers my size haha).

Some of these are still on sale sites/recent.

First up is this unique Taubers:

And last one for today - gotta spread them out a bit. This one's on Ebay and I'd have bought it if it didnt have cracking on the shoulder. The cafe racer or cross zip is probably the most common models of Taubers I see, but brown Taubers seem to be more uncommon.

This is the last of the Taubers in horsehide, mid to late 60s. This one appears to have been used as intended. They produced a variety of jackets, MC style and civilian.

Hard to say what to do about the added tail. It looks like it would keep the wind out for riding. However, the high back seems to be typical of Taubers styling. Did you end up making changes?

I’m over the moon excited to find a Taubers that fits. Too many have passed through my hands that are too small. I found this one on a trip to the Central Coast in California. Thanks to Atascadero Vintage!

What do you think of the main zip? MW makes me think of Montgomery Wards, so it seems to be a replacement. Is the pull an even later replacement?
IMG_6182.jpeg

Anybody have ideas about how to get an MW replacement pull?

The other front zippers are all Talon teardrop that seem to be in great shape.

The sleeve zippers are also Talon.

Has anyone found a good way to repair the damage to the lining near the collar?

I think a lining replacement may eventually be needed for this one. I can live with it, but I definitely want to wear the jacket.
