I have acquired a Lock Homburg in which the hat band has become partially detached and the lining has also become partially detached. Is this something I can repair myself?

    Pince-Nez Eyewear

I recently acquired a pair of Oxford style pince nez that I would like to have lenses put in. Thought I'd re-bump/necro this thread for general pince nez discussion.

    Vintage Eyeglasses

@highway66blues: Did you have a look at this page: http://clearlightoptical.com/Ful-Vue/ It looks like they were introduced in the 1930s (the name is a 'play' on "Full View")

    hat brush as garment brush

That looks good. Does it seem to work well for pet hair too? I'm rather tired of the sticky tape rollers, and was hoping to find an alternative. edit: I'm assuming brash bristles would NOT be good for hats though, right?

    hat brush as garment brush

Maybe I need to look at videos of people using such brushes. I brushed at my black trousers for quite some time, and it didn't seem be able to catch the lint and cat hair on it very well. (I had to resort to the sticky tape roller, which I'd like to find a (permanent) replacement for.)

    hat brush as garment brush

I bought a (fairly cheap) horsehair hat brush. Can this double as a garment/clothing brush? It seems a bit soft for doing such, or am I just not enough used to using a clothes brush?

Photos of my new/old spectacles (marked STOCO, which would seem to imply that they're pre-1925, since the Standard Optical Company became Shur-On in 1925): http://imgur.com/a/1kZfc [The Drs Ravdin seem to be the father and brother of the more famous Isadore Ravdin...

    BRACES (SUSPENDERS)

Oh, she actually did shorten the front straps too - but they're still a bit long (much better than before though - at least the adjusters aren't sitting on my shoulders!) Do you have thoughts on V vs. Y shaped braces, in terms of comfort etc.? I think I might look at getting a pair of the...

Which word for sweater do you prefer?

I'm not sure about "axe" for "ask" in Shakespeare, but it's certainly in Chaucer and Beowulf (so pre-dating Shakespeare by quite a bit). "Axe" for "ask" is actually found in quite a number of different modern dialects of English: http://staefcraeft.blogspot.com/2009/10/beowulf-axes-questions.html

    BRACES (SUSPENDERS)

My wife managed to do one of the braces - one difficulty with the Albert Thurstons I have (I have a few pairs from the special offers section: http://www.albertthurston.com/categoryfast2.cfm?catid=7 ) is that the runner ends are really long themselves, so modifying the braces for high-waisted...

At what weather temp is it time to put fur felt to sleep for the summer?

That's the problem with both measurement systems: one has to be used to using it in order to have any idea of the significance of the temperature.

    BRACES (SUSPENDERS)

Many thanks for all of the additional tips & information & photos. It is all very helpful. I think my wife will have a go at fixing the braces (she's more adept than I with a needle).

    BRACES (SUSPENDERS)

Thanks for the further info. I assume it's do-able by machine too though, no?

At what weather temp is it time to put fur felt to sleep for the summer?

Those who are year-round felt hat wearers (in warmer climes), what sort of felt hat are you wearing? (Not bowlers, for instance, I assume). I picked up a Barmah squashy roo as my "summer hat". It's still a bit hot, but I sweat at the least provocation, hat or no.
