    German & Austrian Hutmachers

And the verdict is: It fits! I measured my head at 55.5, and I ordered a size 56. I would say that the hat fits like a 56, i.e., it's just a touch loose, which isn't bad on a hot summer day, so long as it's not too windy. Adding one sizing spacer to the sweatband makes the hat fit pretty much...

    German & Austrian Hutmachers

@mayserwegener and @mean-eyed-matt, Thanks for the replies and advice. I ordered a 56 and I asked for spacers in the package. We'll see what happens. FYI, he's what I found on the internet about Mayser sizing: "Wir empfehlen Ihnen, die abgelesene Zahl auf die nächstgrößere ganze Zahl...

    German & Austrian Hutmachers

I'm looking to buy my first German-made hat, and I found a Mayser online that I really like, but I am having trouble with the sizing. I wear a 55.5. The seller's website says that if you are between sizes, you should size up, which makes sense. But a different hat store's website warns that...

    Berets, Anyone?

Thank you for the reply. In 1958, while traveling around the Mediterranean, he bought "stereotypical" souvenirs at each port (like a bota bag in Barcelona, etc.). So I think 1958 is still a possible option. While it is also possible that he bought it in 1988, on that trip he bought almost no...

    Berets, Anyone?

Today, I was going through some of my late father-in-law's things, and I came across this beret. The photos speak for themselves: The brand is ostensibly Bilbao. The label under the leather sweatband notes that it was Made in France. The "100% Reine Wolle" label makes me think that it was...

    Berets, Anyone?

Now that it is completely dry, it is back to being floppy. Maybe not 100% as floppy as before, but very close. And I think it shrank up only a little. It's not obvious, but if you are looking for it, it seems to be there.

    Berets, Anyone?

I own a MB (from the days when it was still Boneteria Auloronesa), and I have long thought it was a little too puffy for my size 55 head. I wanted the crown to fit just a little smaller. So tonight I gave my MB a shrink treatment . . . with surprising results. I sprayed water on it with a...

On TV, I saw Spike Lee wearing an orange peaked beret.

    Berets, Anyone?

On the topic of peaked berets, I saw one "in the wild" today. A woman at the supermarket was wearing one. I was curious about the brand, where she bought it, etc., but I didn't ask.

    Berets, Anyone?

Over the weekend, the world lost one of the great beret wearers of our time: Edgar Hilsenrath. This famous German-Jewish author was rarely in public without a beret. A few obituaries... German...

    Berets, Anyone?

On the topic of berets in Argentina, I recently received this catalogue, where a beret is modeled by famous chef and noted boinero Francis Mallmann!

Looks on you. By the way . . . Stefan Zweig, Elias Canetti, DH Lawrence, et al.? You've got some great reading there!

    Berets, Anyone?

Today, the New York Times had an article on fashion and personal style in Tokyo, and by my count, there were four berets depicted (three on women and one on a man). No doubt there are many more to be seen on the streets of Toyko. Excellent...

    Berets, Anyone?

I don't own a Czech Mammoth, but I am 95% sure that I own that exact same scarf. But where I live, it's more like 35 degrees C. And I can't wait until it's more like 10 degrees or less so I can go back to comfortably wearing a nice wool beret. I'd even settle for 15.

    Berets, Anyone?

Good to know. My 54/55 head isn't small. It's vintage!
