    The Party Line....

I am surprised it was not even more. In 1962 I called from London, England to San Jose, Calif. to give a friend a report on a race car that was for sale and a three minute call was $25.00. We really talked fast. Maybe mine was a 'person to person' call instead of a 'station to station'...

    EXchange names for phone numbers

In the 310 area code, we have had to dial 310 to make a call in the same area for about 3-4 years. I believe all of the wireless devices in use is causing them to run out of phone numbers. The alternative to the above was to split the the area code and assign a new area code to many...

    EXchange names for phone numbers

Hi Flivver, That may be correct; I don't know. But, I believe it was only within the past 10 years or so that area codes could have a numeral other than a 1 or 0 as the second digit. Anyone who listened to The Original Amateur Hour on the radio (a long time ago) has heard of the Murray...

    "Telegram" style emails

I might be wrong, but I think we no longer have telegrams in this country. I believe Western Union only offers money transfer service now. I have lived in the same place for over 40 years and no longer even know where they still have an office.

    Help with Houndstooth?

I would wear a light blue shirt with just about anything I would wear a white shirt with. Unless one is attending a funeral or some very dressy occasion I think a light blue shirt is fine. I have them in Oxford, chambray, pinpoint, and end-on-end and they are the shirts I wear the most. I...

    Help with Houndstooth?

I am a bit late to this thread, but with that jacket, I would wear gray trousers, a solid colored shirt and knit or grenadine tie (probably in burgandy) or if a striped tie one with wide stripes. There are, of course, a lot of other combinations that would look fine.

    LA in the 1940's

Coming to a book store near you soon: "Everything You wanted to Know About Huell Houser" by John in Covina. ;) Seriously, Thanks for all the good information and the correction on the name of his program. I have not seen his show in awhile and I just recently got a DVR so I am going to...

    LA in the 1940's

Hi John, Huell Howser is certainly no Ralph Storey (sp). It seems to me that he often does not pay attention to what he is being told, asks redundant questions, and thinks everything he sees is wonderful. None the less, I think his programs are great and he finds some really interesting...

Life as it was lived then

I don't remember them since then either. I don't think they were used much during The War except for that night in 1942 that I mentioned.

Life as it was lived then

I remember people arriving at a movie theater part way during the showing. They were often accompanied by an usher with a flashlight. Some theaters had more comfortable seats at the rear called louges (I doubt I spelled that correctly) and tickets were slightly more expensive for those...

Anyone want a repro 1936 Mercedes 540K special roadster?

I think that is just a super looking car from the 30s. I have a 1:18 scale model of it in my collection of, mostly old, car models. I am amazed that the builder could find trim pieces for a car of which only 25 were made in Germany 80 years ago. It appears the workman ship is first class...

    LA in the 1940's

Thanks for posting the picture of the Big Red Car that operates at San Pedro. It sure bring back memories and the copy of an early century model does not look much different from the ones I rode in the 40s and early 50s. Back in the day, the ones that went to downtown L.A went to the Subway...

    LA in the 1940's

After the trolley cars were gone from L.A. we had some 'trackless trolleys' (busses powered by overhead electrical wires) for a while. I can't remember where they ran. I used to ride the big Red Cars when I was young - showing my age here :) but I don't have the faintest idea how to get any...

favorite cars of the golden era

Jay Leno has a very nice car collection which he shares with us at: http://www.jaylenosgarage.com/garage/index.shtml He has cars from the Golden Era and just about every other era. Unlike some collectors he drives all of them and unlike some sites he has videos describing the cars and...

    When is overdressing acceptable?

I am a Certified Senior Citizen and really seldom have a need for tailored clothing, but in the past few years I have purchased four suits (all but one is a 3 piece), a couple of blue blazers, and two sport coats. When I have lunch out with a friend or go to the doctor or dentist, I usually...
