    Chinese hats

Yes, yes, yes, I understand the economics of it all. I was being flippant and a bit sarcastic. (I guess my sarcasm, like that of the "New Yorker," is a bit too vague.) I was not particularly interested in this seller's hat quality in as much as the quality of this type of hat generally.

    Chinese hats

What is the deal with these hats? Is there no market no matter how niche it might be that the Chinese aren't trying to corner? I hadn't seen these hats before now. I knew that there were cheap Chinese hats on the market, but was not sure what they were like.

    Milan Mania

Lefty, The Cav is my favorite. I think it's the same model as in the ad. The Cav has a much finer (thinner ?) straw weave than the Portis. It is clearly a much nicer hat. However, it needs some restoration work.

Cheesy and lengthy introduction by new member

Welcome to the lounge. I must concur that the look of the hat in the last photo is exceptional. It seems just like hats everyone has 12,000 opinions.

    Strange weaving

Here are some pics of a panama I own (cuenca I'm pretty sure). The center of the hat doesn't have the typical rosette. The straw seems to be brought together in the center in an X formation. Has anyone else seen this type of weaving pattern? I also included some other photos. This hat is as...

    Panama hat liner

Hello all, Is it feasible to put some kind of liner in a panama hat? I tend to sweat a lot and my hat touches, ever so lightly, the top of my head. I'm bald on top so the sweat transfers a bit to the top of the hat. I want to keep it from staining or ruining the straw. Any suggestions...

Milans from Optimo & Panama Grading

Bob, I like Tom's idea about a Montecristi of the month pic in the newsletter. It would give us all a chance to see some of the fine hats people are weaving and buying.

    Sherlock Holmes Hat

Hey everyone, I like the brim treatment on this hat from the "Voice of Terror" (1942). I can't decide though if this is a Homburg with the front turned down or not. Any thoughts? Lucas

    Panama Brim Issue

Actually, a cuenca is not always a stiff hat. I have a cuenca, which I acquired from PanamaBob that is as supple and flexible as any montecristi. That being said you can find some cuencas that are very stiff. I have found that with a stiffer brim your chance of the hat flying off in a wind...

    Panama Hat Pics

Here are some of my favorite pics from the Corbis Photograph Collection. Corbis is a great collection of American (north or south) photographs many of which are online. The citation and copyright info follows each pic. On the Set of "The Last Emperor" Actor Peter O'Toole on the set...
