If the beginning of the bowl is problematic I am guessing you aren't doing a pre-lighting burn. What this means is you pull a little harder than you normaly would if you were smoking while moving your flame around all the tobacco on top, you should see it all start to glow red if done right...

Bought them on Ebay, they looked pretty rough until I handmade some nice stems out of acrylic to make them a bit more modern, now they make great smokers. Nothing smells as good as a fresh bowl of trout stream out of them.
