I believe it is due to the flange that was used in the construction of the hat but I'm just guessing.

Stetson Florentine Milan Stratoliner that behaves much like Gary in NC's hemp one. I can snap the brim down & it looks " all wonky"" for lack of a technical term. Lol.

I've got a Florentine Milan Stetson Stratoliner very similar except for the color & it doesn't look right snapped down either.

Normally I shy away from the porkpie style hat . Then I saw this old survivor, priced right, my size, made in England no less ( Failsworth ?) I decided what the heck...why not.

I recently acquired a John B. Stetson Clear Nutria hat that has G. Henry Stetson stamped into the leather sweatband. It came with the original box which is different from other vintage Stetson hat boxes I have. Here's a couple of pictures

I always get a chuckle when I see stuff like that, and I've seen it on older hats too. Ya know how those marketing guys are...lol.
