The recent financial troubles emanating in Europe, has seen the US Dollar appreciate against the Euro, and Sterling, but the Australian Dollar has also been hit, probably because if rebounded so quickly following the subprime crisis, on the back of Commodities and China.

Time to buy Akubra`s (and RM Williams) again...

But I'm bored of Akubra :p

I want American hats!
Maybe time to think of custom hats.

Judging by one of your recent postings I think you might like one of these from RMR hats in Italy, http://www.rmr-hats.com/Shop-Winter-hats-1-32.html Because of the wider brim I am interested to buy the Hermes 70 on that page. All the rest of the offerings from this retailer seem to be 2 1/2 brim or less.

Myself, I am looking to custom hats, and Italian hats, plus the occasional EBay vintage hat buy. One thing about buying hats and following the photos on this forum is that you can sharpen your idea of what you want. Unfortunately that leaves me wanting more than I can afford. But it's better than not knowing your style, because that would involve more expense and disappointment.

Thats why you should keep a few silver coins in your pocket :) Cant go wrong there but its a pain to do a transaction and convenience everyone its worth a whole lot more than current face value. The fiat currency is the strangest thing I have ever seen. Its like all the countries got together and decided that a pink elephants in the room. I'm just waiting for the first logical person say "there is no elephant"

Just give it a bit this administration will spend another imagery trillion dollars and knock it down again :)

It's sad that they offer such a strangely limited choice of colors. Why not offer Tawny Fawn in each model? Because they just don't want to.

If you're talking about Hats Direct, they have to keep inventory in stock. This costs a lot of money, given the number of styles and sizes they carry. They're order you whatever color you want if you've got three months to wait.
Actually the Akubra rep posted here for a while and I put that question to him, along with the idea that they are losing business because of limited colors available for each model. His reply was that they had no plans to offer any different selections. I asked him how hard it could possibly be to just carry a different color felt over to where someone was making a Bogart, and to use it for that one hat. He agreed it would be easy, and he reiterated that they had no plans to do so.

He probably said that it sounds easy. It's a nice way of saying "Go away, kids, yer buggin' me!" But saying something sounds easy to do doesn't mean that it IS easy to do, nor is is usally cost effective. Watch Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House. It SOUNDS really easy to put some spare pieces of slate down for a floor in a small utility closet... What sounds easy to the layman doesn't usually take into account what other tasks & steps need to be accomplished to reach that point.

The big thing is all these different hats in different colors and different sizes would have to be stored somewhere. Hats don't all sell the day they hit the store. The more choices you give people, the more inventory the manufacturer and retailer have to have on hand waiting for someone to buy. Storage is expensive. VERY expensive.

Akubra obviously know very well what colors will sell best in each model of hat. It doesn't matter that one person wants a particular hat in a particular color (that's what Art Fawcett and other custom hatters are for). Akubra doesn't make money on custom hats. Akubra makes money by sellling a large number of hats. They haven't been in business as long as they have because they're purposely losing sales - they know what will and won't sell at what price.

Look what's happened over & over here at the Lounge. Someone comes up with "a great new idea that hasn't come up before - what about a special issue F/L hat?" And then the fun starts - everyone wants a different brim size, crown height, color, ribbon, liner, bash, etc. What everyone wants is a custom made hat at mass production prices. It doesn't work that way.

Food for Thought

I generally spell it "Arrgh !"

Looking at the graph at xe.com, the AUD was as low as 0.78 USD in the last year and as high as 0.937 USD. That's an over 20% change, low to high.

If the House of Cards freshly created in the U.S. to protect the people Franklin Roosevelt referred to as "banksters" collapses, we may really have some volatility. :(

Sounds like a rep. Along with, "hmmm....I've never heard that problem before."

I can say that, I'm a rep.:D

Some ordered the $90.00 Australian hat at $72.85 U.S. :)

Sadly, some waited. (Okay, it isn't that big a deal.)

The Australian dollar has climbed to just under $0.85 U.S. as of this posting.

Track the gyration of the world's currencies :

http://www.xe.com/ucc/

The quote is from 10 June 2010.

The Australian dollar reached $0.94 U.S. today, and the famous ninety dollar (AUD) hat is perched at $84.43 U.S. from EA.

Is parity on the way ? [huh]
