You mean, "the insurance investigator with the action-packed expense account. Yours truly, Johnny Dollar" never made it to TV? According to the nets all TV got was a single pilot aired in 1962, one that didn't get picked up for a series. He was a day late and a dollar short, apparently.

For me, the major influences were the 4:30 movie (1960s), where I saw all the classics, and TV shows like The Untouchables.

When I joined TFL I was a bit surprised that these detectives weren't talked about more. Than I found out there was huge and horrible gaps in my knowlege of hats that were being discussed. Than I found out that they were being talked about in other parts of TFL (I usually stick to the hat's forum) just not specifically their hats.
I remember my Dad bringing home some old Dick Tracy comic collections from a thrift store, and seeing that nearly every character wore a hat. Even at that age I thought "Man why don't people wear hats anymore?" I was already into swing music and hardboiled detective stories, but that was the first time I remember really wanting a fedora, soon after hat Dad brought me a tan trench coat and an old, worn, wool, fedora home from that magical thrift store.
