Anybody have the latest news on the store that's supposed to be opening in Custer, South Dakota?

Can't help you there, Andy. They don't post that kind of information in Southern New England, but I'd sure love to visit Custer, SD someday. Keep us informed about the hat store if it opens and what you think of it.

Nope. Nothing on his site and the last discussion in the thread was in November. But be patient! (I know, I'd be having a hard time being patient if it was me waiting for a hat store to open nearby. :p ) There's a lot that has to be done to prep for a move like that. Also, I can't imagine anyone trying to do a move from Illinois to South Dakota during the winter. It'd be an exercise in pain.

Just enjoy the anticipation while it lasts! :D

Cheers,
Tom

Andy,

I was talking to Brad (Eye of the West) the other day when picking up a hat he transformed for me. Mentioning that I was both a retired "mustang" and recent civilian retiree from EAFB he countered that there was an avid fedora enthusiast there that did some business with him. That wouldn't be you now would it?

Indeed it would be me! I've been in there talking his ear off on more than one occasion; great guy, Brad Montague. Planning on collaborating to design and make a 100% beaver Stratoliner or Open Road in the summer.
Regards, Andy

PS: I've been stationed here almost 6 years, working in the electric shop in CE. It's getting to be time to move, though. 6 years is a long time to be stuck in one spot in military!

Indeed it is! The longest I was any one place was a bit over 5 years at Offutt. At Rhein-Main I had a supervisor who had arrived there as a SSgt and retired there as a SMSgt after being on station something like 17 years. During that time he got orders only once, and those were canceled at the last minute. I'm surprised he made Senior.

Cheers,
Tom

Andy,

Have you handled any of Brad's custom $775 100x hats? Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeew :)

I was the Deputy Chief of Supply until LRS was created and that position killed. I retired this past March from CE as one of the Flight Chiefs :) I'm also a retired "mustang" having been both a naval officer and an army NCO.

I came to Ellsworth in '93 after BRAC closed a naval nuclear shipyard I worked at.

I sure have; he has one on his display at the stock show as we speak. I just came from down there, chit-chatting and such. About the only thing I don't care for on his hats is how he tacks his ribbons. He stitches through the middle and pulls it so tight that it deforms the ribbon. I don't know if it has something to do with the quality of the ribbon itself (Art has spoken about new ribbons not having as much play in them as the older ones) or what. Personally, I would try to get my stitching as close to the lower border as possible, to try and hide them. But... I'm not a hatter, so there's little room for me to comment; much the good ol' armchair quarterbacklol

Bob... I'm trying to remember who you might be... what flight were you in?

Regards, Andy

I feel out of the loop now, I've lived out here for five years and I still don't know where any of the hatshops are. I guess I need to create more time to just roam around.

Allen,
Do you know where Borders is on Haines Ave in Rapid City? Right across the street in that little mall is a shop called Buckaroo Bonzai (or something like that). That's where Brad Montague's Star of the West Hatters is out of.

Tom,
How long ago was it that you said you retired?

Two and a half years, Andy... and I still miss it. I literally dream about it on a regular basis. I'm putting in for civilian positions in my old career field now, but AFPC doesn't say where or when there might be openings--you just give them your resume and indicate where you'd like to be stationed and hope something comes up, I guess. Kinda like the old dream sheets we used to fill out.

Regards,
Tom
