I stream a classic country station on my computer out of Milwaukee. They play some vintage commercials and one new one that hasn't changed much in years. "Who do you know wants to buy a car?!" says Ernie VonSchledorn in that old German accent and his jingle "Ernie Von Schledorn, Main Street in Menomonee Falls." I remember those commercials as a kid, as do my parents. My grandpa was actually friends with Ernie and bought all of his cars from him.

Funny story, he sold my grandpa a new AMC Eagle in 1981, and he sold it to my mom in '83 (I remember the car well) The engine blew up (this car went through several engines and trannies, a real lemon) and it happened 2 days after the end of the warranty, so they wouldn't fix it. My grandpa, who is 6'4 and around 400 lbs. went in and told him he was going to whoop the living snot out of Ernie if he didn't fix that car. The warranty was honored.

We had a guy out here named Richard Wehren (I'm only guessing at the spelling) who was either German or Scandinavian and had a Honda dealership. I remember his commercials, he sounded a bit like Jogi Jorgensen: "I'm Richard Vehren and I vant to sell you a carr".

1935 – Orangina‘s origin
At the Marseilles Trade Fair, a Spanish pharmacist, Dr. Trigo, presents his new invention, Naranjina, a sparkling and natural drink made of orange juice and pulp. Seduced by the recipe, Leon Beton buys the concept and launches it on the Algerian market.

1951 – Orangina’s launch in France
Jean Claude Beton, who took over the company from his father in 1947, creates "La Compagnie Française des produits Orangina" at Boufarik, in Algeria. He starts producing Orangina for France, where the product reawakens the joys of summer and the youthful spirit that blossomed after World War II.

Dad's Root Beer - This weeks sodt drink

Dad’s Root Beer was developed in the 1930s by partners Barney Berns and Ely Klapman, in the basement of Mr. Klapman’s Chicago-area home. The Dad’s brand was immediately famous throughout the midwest area and by the late 1940s, was one of the most-consumed brands of Root Beer throughout the United States. Jules Klapman, son of co-founder Ely, was successful in bringing the Dad’s brand to the international stage. The name Dad’s Old Fashioned Root Beer was coined in honor of Eli Klapman’s father, and any other fathers across the country, who used to make root beer at home for their families (a popular thing to do in the early 20th Century).

Cast iron pans. I love them, and I'm glad you can still pick them up in most places that sell pots and pans. I don't really want the non-stick sort, and if you season your cast iron and use it correctly, nothing will stick to it anyway. Also, you get a little more iron in your food when you cook in cast iron.

I can't stand teflon coated pans. They're so delicate when it comes to cleaning. Cast iron is great. When seasoned correctly they clean up just fine.

Gunsmiths are very few and far between, these days. We've been trying to get an in-house one for a coon's age. We were going to send my brother to school, but even if we did that, the insurance is like paying for Malpractice insurance.

Wood burning stoves for heating one's home. This one is in the place I've just moved into. I love it but I wish I knew more about it. What era it was made, etc. The fireproofing behind it is far too modern for my taste, but this is a rental. ETA- I think the stove is from the 80s. Oh well.
