This is my first post here but i have been lurking the hat forum for some time. I think I might have found something special. Well I have to give credit to my wife. She found this hat at a estate sale the other day. Could this be the ultimate cowboy hat?? Could it be a hat That was owned by Roy Rogers??

You need a URL to the picture to get the IMG tags to work properly. HTH.
Some videos here about Roy doing his signature creases, seemed to be Resistols & not a Stetson but sure he owned many of brands.

Yes, thats what i thought also but i cant find any information anywhere. I did find some closed auctions that claimed a hat with these marks come from the Roy Rogers museum. Just thought I would post here to pick the minds of the experts here..

GS,
First of all, Welcome to the Lounge!

I believe what you have is a vintage Stetson Roy Rogers model. I would guess it is from the 50s, based on the way it's made and considering that was the height of his popularity.

Nothing against Stetson ... I'm sure this is a very nice hat ... but I believe the King of the Cowboys got his hats and the rest of his bling from Nudies in L.A. That's just from memory, though.

Mr. Slye was quite a guy, and he liked his hats.

Congrats on a neat find.

Sam

Thanks. I have seen the Nudies hats but they are a later made hat and usually a Resistol. If it is just a run of the mill hat has anyone else seen one?

I have not seen this sweatband autograph imprint before but you will find many threads and posts here on Stetson hat models and quality/price levels. Some examples of Stetson's 3X Beaver are quite wonderful, especially in earlier decades. The 3x in the 1950s was a $15 hat. There were 20, 25, 35, 50 and 100 dollar hats being sold at this time, which suggests had this been a special presentation hat made for Roy Rogers, it might have been made using a higher level hat.

This is a great thread to thumb through when you have the time.

Nudie started doing Roys outfits in the very late 40s early 50s from what i"ve found. Maybe he wasnt into hats at the time this one was made? The Nudies hats from the Roy Roger auctions wasnt high quality hats.

I have done several of my own hats in the double-tear-drop (or double C-crown) style:

If the crown has a lot of felt (high crown), and you want to rake it down in the back, this can create a problem if you head has a high crown, have to push that felt in the middle of the crown up. Sometimes that can be an unsightly bubble that makes the hat look goofy, so you consume the extra felt by putting an extra ripple or crease around the inside of the crown, it just becomes a practical solution to the problem. jwalls version of the crease is more true to the Rogers style.
