Ray Winder Field (1932) Gone by Friday

One of the oldest minor league fields will be gone and replaced with a parking lot. I am in tears.:Cry:
Went to many games in the mid to late 1960's with my dad.

That's horrific. The philistines have ruined major league baseball with their theme-park stadiums, obnoxious rock music, and electronic idiot boards, and now they're doing the same thing to the minor leagues. Condolences.

Ray Winder Field will always have a place in my heart. It was on of the ones that did not have the rock music etc. I am sure the new stadium in North Little Rock has added all the modern touches.

I hope they're at least going to put down a memorial plaque or something to mark the site of the old place. Too many small-town ballparks just disappear without a trace.

You should go down before it's too late and grab a piece of debris as a memento. It might be hard to do now, but years from now you'll be glad you did.

I don't understand the point of all the whoop-te-doo they put on in the new stadiums -- they talk about making baseball "family friendly" and all that, but it seems like when you go into one of these places that it has about as much to actually do with watching and enjoying a ballgame as Chucky Cheese has to do with enjoying pizza. Blech.

Our local ballpark Devereux Meadows, once home of the Caps and the Triangles, built in 1938 and closed in 1979, is now the parking lot for the city's garbage trucks.

Yes, condolances, Dixie, on Ray Winder Field. Just SAD. My first job was at the concession stand at the old Durham Bulls (North Carolina) baseball park, LOVED it -- free games, good folks, free lemonade- or peach-slushies (my job at the stand), what more could a kid want, I couldn't believe they PAID me for that job, and I've been missing it ever since... far less "circus-y" than the newer Mega-Complex... That's where I learned that it's IMPORTANT to REMEMBER to check that the lid on the blender is locked before turning it on; first night, first few folks in the front of the line got a free peach slushy in the FACE, but everyone was real cool about it (lucky I was a kid)...

OUCH, I'd heard of the park, but didn't know THAT'S the spot where it used to be... (another current Raleigh-ite here)

This article came out in April... Talk of converting the site into some sort of "recreation center" with a commemorative plaque for the ballpark that once was... Whenever I'm in that area again I'll have to take notice, but if you've been by there recently, have you seen any such activity? (and the book linked at the end of the article looks interesting...)
