Strouse & Bros.

Strouse & Bros.' Clothing Palace. Evansville, Indiana

The popular clothing firm of Strouse & Bros. was founded in 1868 by several brothers who came here from Baltimore. They are still at the same location (in 1962), but have greatly expanded the width of their store. They were perforce in temporary quarters for some months following a fire which destroyed the store in 1945.


The Strouse family settled in Evansville, Indiana (Vanderburgh County) and Baltimore Maryland. Abraham Strouse and Benjamin Strouse went to Evansville. Benjamin later moved to Baltimore where he and his brothers established Strouse, Bros., a prosperous clothing store.

A Strouse clothing store was started earlier in Evansville. The family story is that Benjamin and his brother or father (probably Samuel)hired a painter to put up a sign. Instead of painting Strauss, the family name, the sign read STROUSE. Not having enough money, the sign stayed STROUSE. Strouses still live in Baltimore.
