Nice clean design on the hat/coatrack combo there DOGMAN and you gotta love those rounding jacks. I'm curious to know if you've used the heat on your hat stretcher. I have one, but haven't fired it up yet. I know they used them so the hat could be stretched, dried, and wear ready while the customer waited, but I'm just wondering about the practical application in the hatmaker's shop and, of course, the level of risk of scorching the sweatband.

I use the heat on my electric hat stretcher occasionally but it is fierce and needs to be watched. I've never scorched a sweatband. It's useful for heating up the hat before conforming it. I have a feeling though that it expands when it gets hot, which would make sense wouldn't it. Which means that the dimensions are different than the scale and you can end up over-stretching the hat.

My favourite piece of equipment at the moment is my branding iron with my logo on it. It's taken a bit of trial and error but I'm getting there now I think.

Thank you,RJR,humanshoes,bloc.The hat coat hangers were fun to make.Humanshoes,yes I have used the heat.I found a hat that was 22",I'm 23".So I heated the stretcher up till it was hot but not hot enough to burn my skin.Then when it was hot I put the hat on it and stretched it to 23".Then I took the sweatband and did the same thing and stretched it.

Finally got around to setting up my dedicated hat brim binding station. Found the Singer 401A at the Habitat store and made the table from a $5 pine round from Home Depot. Added a maple brim guide and I'm in business. Got tired of changing out my old Singer 66-16 every time I needed to do a binding.

I may be corrected, but to the best of my knowledge, the newer stuff is not what you are looking for; it's either acetate or polyester or occasionally rayon.
You want Petersham in rayon/cotton blend.
I have Petersham in solids I would be happy to sell you. I've sent some vintage ribbon to gentlemen here on the Lounge. A couple people on this thread can vouch for me and I've swapped ribbon with Art (Hi Art! :cool2

That 401A is a workhorse. Quite a few of the guys on one of my hammock camping forums swear by that particular thread injector as a quality unit when it comes to making camping gear at home. Much better than the old New Home model I use which I swear *at* quite often.

I seem to be saying "They don't make 'em like they used to" more and more often these days, but in the case of the 401A it's spot on. This one stills runs like the day it came out of the factory and is built like a tank.

Things now are not built to last for ever but to last a couple of years because it will become obsolete. Technology is moving too fast.

This hat maker was out of East Germany (Ernst Gierisch, Zwickau) .
I contacted the DE eBay seller and this is what he had to say. I will have to check back with him on the current situation.

These are stills are from a film that was made in 1943 by Janyška hat company (located near Novy Jicin) that shows the old felt and hat making methods. I am checking to see if the film is now available. I know the Museo dell'Arte del Cappello di Ghiffa (located in the old Panniza factory) also has a copy of the film.
I've been to nova juicing in Slovenia. One of the biggest felt makers has a fully functioning factory with at least 100 employees!
