New to the Vintage lifestyle, first meet up turned into a disaster

Lisserbee, read your post with great interest and sadness to realize this type of behavior still exists. As one who grew up in the south during the 60's I saw too many examples of racism and bigotry, even from family members and to this day I still struggle to understand where the hate came from.
Much later in life, in my former profession I had the displeasure of having to provide security at KKK rallies on three separate occasions. These were events my co-workers and I would often describe as places where the women had more toes than teeth. To see a three year old marching in hood and robe alongside their parents was one of the more disturbing things I have ever seen and made it easy to see how the hate is perpetuated. Probably saw some of the nitwits you met. Hang in here and you'll meet good folks.

That is absolutely bizarre. I've found in my personal travels that people in the vintage community are typically more open-minded and understanding than the masses. I think part of it comes from all the accusations that if you prefer the past, you must be an uneducated, bigoted, misogynist idiot who wants to bring back Jim Crow and take the vote away from women. Knowing people like this exist is perhaps where that impression has come from.
I understand that everyone is welcome to their opinion, but if that is their opinion, I suggest keeping it to themselves. That is the most simple form of manners in existence. If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all.

I can't believe that OP! That's insane. It sounds like a gathering for people with mental illnesses (except that actually, that wouldn't be a fair comment, since mental illness is a serious issue that many people suffer from). I really cannot imagine a more bizarre group of people lacking manners even more than me!
They are playing 'make believe' that they live in the Golden Era, they don't actually live in the Golden Era, and however common those kind of sentiments may or may not have been in the Golden Era, they are not acceptable now under any circumstances.

Just when you think attitudes are changing it's sad to read something like this. I'm sure many here would like to know where this was. I don't even dress vintage but if it was in my area I would. I would make sure to bring someone that would rile them up for observation then give them a piece of my mind.

Sounds as though it happened in southern Illinois. Not to disrespect my many dear, kind, sane, and enlightened friends at Edwardsville and Carbondale, but when Lisserbee identified the location, I did wonder ... there's something about the migration of former slave-owners into the southern counties of Illinois and Indiana that, shall we say, left its mark, even though that occurred almost two hundred years ago.
Wait a minute -- wanted to add -- regarding an earlier post above: I am positive that you wouldn't find those attitudes in deep South states like Mississippi. Not at all. But somehow they do linger in places just beyond the border. I couldn't really speculate why.

Well noted. People seldom stop to consider that Cairo ("KAY- row") Illinois lies further south than Richmond, Virginia. South of Effingham is definitely a different world from Chicago, or even Freeport or Rockford. Even Abe Lincoln recognized that: commissioning southern Illinois Democrats such as Logan and Pope as generals for their efforts in raising regiments for the Union cause in that area.

The midwest -- specifically Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan -- was the cradle of several of the racially-based "American fascist" movements during the Era. The Coughlinites and the Black Legion were the most noticeable, but the Silver Shirts and the German-American Bund also had a strong presence in these states. And, of course, in the twenties, the Klan pretty much ran the state of Indiana, and was very strong thruout the midwest.
The supporters of those movements didn't just disappear when the movements themselves broke up. The Horst Wessel Song may be over, but clearly the melody lingers on.

If my childhood memory serves, there was a bit of a news storm when some nazi group wanted to march in Skokie Ill in the '70s. I remember my Dad hating that they wanted to do that but saying to me that freedom includes allowing idiots to do stupid things like this.

What made that incident especially vile was that Skokie, at that time, contained a very large population of Holocaust survivors. The Nazi group involved was an Illinois-based party drawn from the remnants of George Lincoln Rockwell's sixties-era organization.

If they’re one thing, it’s hypocrites. There’s a distinct possibility that Herr Hitler himself could have been a quarter Jewish. His father was illegitimate and there is some question as to the father.
